There are 2 types of starter motors as suggested, I have tested the one with built in relay ( or more than likely an Electronic circiuit inside the solenoid ) and the current that it takes to operate the solenoid is very small, So I would think that you need to check the original starter motor and compare it with the new one.

If you can disconnect the wire off the solenoid, You may find that you then get a feed down the wire using a voltmeter etc, If so, Then it may be possible to get around the problem by fitting a relay. ??

But I wouldn't be too happy that someone had supplied me with a wrong starter motor to fit on such an Awkward job.
