Mercedes Benz A160 1.6 2003 - Starting fault - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2003
Engine Size and Code *: 1.6

Car has starting problems at times so we changed ignition switch same problem week later so we them changed starter motor now we can't start it doesn't turn over. power is coming out of ignition switch but not geting to starter i have tested new starter on floor before fitting its ok on the right of the engine theres a fuse box but only 3 relays starter one can't be found been told on sum there built in starter but it worked on the floor? can any one help thanx

You need to perform more through checks of the starter circuit. The ignition switch sends a signal the to ECM which earths the starter relay.

Autodata has a wiring diagram for this car.

There are 2 types of starter motors as suggested, I have tested the one with built in relay ( or more than likely an Electronic circiuit inside the solenoid ) and the current that it takes to operate the solenoid is very small, So I would think that you need to check the original starter motor and compare it with the new one.

If you can disconnect the wire off the solenoid, You may find that you then get a feed down the wire using a voltmeter etc, If so, Then it may be possible to get around the problem by fitting a relay. ??

But I wouldn't be too happy that someone had supplied me with a wrong starter motor to fit on such an Awkward job.

thanxs Tony that was it the wrong starter motor from euro's what i understand from it is that if it has the relay in fuse box in engine bay 'green' number 4 them its a standard starter but if it don't that relay you will need the starter with in built relay. its a shame i didn't log back on & had to work it out
