I finally bit the bullet and took the car to the local Peugeot dealer. They cleared the fault codes (as i had with 3 different machines) and everything returned to normal.
Now a week or so later and still all OK. Unfortunately we will never no which component was responsible for the fault. All three have been listed on the forum as contenders.
