I'm not very experienced on CAN but the figures I have state that it should normally be about 60 ohms between those pins.
If you have borrowed the type of box sold by Snap-On or Pico the booklet is not much help but the flashing LED's should tell you if there is any activity.
Someone else may correct me if I'm wrong.
