This sort of thing annoys me and I have heard it so often. If Ford have built the car, then they should be able to fix it.
Anyway, assuming the plugs are OK my next step would be to suspect a valve problem and would change the oil with an engine flush. I also use a can of Forte Gas treatment and then let the customer have it back for a week or so and see what happens. If problem still persists and assuming no DTC's are recorded, I would send the ECU away for testing.
I hate intermittent problems!
