Thanks for all the advise guys. took all the advise did all the checks. vacuum was varying in pipe to wastegate actuator but was a fixed value from the pump itself. saw maf varying as driven but car actually went quite well so thought maf must be ok ! had been told new maf had been tried by another garage (you can see where im going here i can tell) and had put a supposed known good one on myself. anyway fitted a new maf and problem 95% solved . driven 2 others since and they drove exactly the same. its just when you are not looking for it you dont notice when its ever so slight maybe a characteristic?. customer been back in very happy so thats it .the surging foxed me would never have thought maf. had someone else not already fitted one would have tried earlier. Also although car went well enough it did actually fly after new maf fitted.
