    Wayne.
    The ECU is reading the crank and cam sensor,it will detect a misfire because the engine should speed (Slightly) up after a cylinder fires. Or to put in another way the engine Pulse,s each time a cylinder fires. If the ecu does not see the pulse it will denote a misfire, and because it know when this happen it can denote the cylinder involved.
    Inlet gaskets (rubber seal)are known to go,as are headgaskets DOH.
