Thanks to everyone for all your help Looks like you were all spot on with your diagnosis The valve timing was miles out Have been down to my local VW dealers and bribed the mechanics in the workshop for printed info on timing chain replacementPlan to do the job next week will let you know how it goes then Once again I owe Uk autotalk and Its Members for all their help Terry
