Tony was spot on ! it was the oxygen sensor, what was weird was that with the sensor removed from the downpipe but still plugged in the car was ok but as soon as it was refitted the loss of power was back.Garage somehow managed to return cat to suppliers which was lucky for them, incidentally, the car had a new oxy sensor about 6 months ago from 'fuel parts' due to high gas readings on MOT, one of the universal 4 wire sensors, and this was the culprit ! I have never come across an o2 sensor that has caused such a dramatic performance loss but you live and learn !
