Interesting Darren. There have been a few other fords over the years with similar problem If my memory serves me right one of the scorpio frogeye type could do similar.
So basically as Clive says is probably software problem as pcm does not expect to see 3000rpm without vehicle moving so doesn't bother to keep everything on even keel.
I was looking at similar car the other day for central locking fault and IDS would not let me proceed without performing pcm software update.
I wonder if this is something to do with it . Maybe there are a few out there that never got updates from dealers when fairly new.
