    Hi Shaun

What year is the car, 4 or 6 cyl and is it fly by wire?

These vehicles have a lot of problems, but as you have no fault codes, 1st check the throttle housing for carbon build up, they run a very high egr% and I have seen vehicles with clogged inlet tracks. Some agents make a plate to block the egr but wont admit it. 2nd, if you have a scanner that reads live readings check the fuel rail pressure, it is usually around 4-5 kpa, if the vehicle is loosing pressure you should see it there, I had an 02 v6 Pajero a few weeks ago that had missfire faults logged and the pump was crook. If you dont have a scanner that shows fuel pressure, use a DMM or a scope at the fuel pressure sensor on the pump and watch the voltage when the faut occurs, you should loose voltage. On the inlet pipe going into the high pressure pump the is a small filter, like a injector gauze filter, you can remove that an see if the car improves. 3rd, the throttle motor does go wrong but it will normally give you a hard code.
