does this have a map sensor or maf meter, it sounds like a timing control device thats all ower the place and a map sensor it cucial for timing/fueling adjustments on engines. Another thougth (but very doubtful) is the valve timing ok. I know on diesels that they have a fly by wire accelerator pedal which are none for being faulty and causing no reving situation but not sure if petrol models have them fitted.
Knock sensors can come loose and retard timing but i would have thought fault code stored for this.
