    Hi Kev,

Look at this from the point of view of someone who realised a long time ago that you just can't do this job anymore with just a Scanner or just a Sykes MAP or just a KTS.

We all know that even to do basic servicing now we need some form of diagnostic equipment to turn out service lights, change brake pads, bleed clutch systems, turn out ABS or SRS lamps when we have inadvertently flagged a code during our repairs.

A lot of people on here have spent many tens of thousands of pounds on advanced equipment and information systems to enable them to competently repair the electrical/elctronic faults on modern motor cars.

These consist of scopes, scanners/usually dealer tools or near dealer level, four and five gas analysers and countless other tools to aid them in the diagnostic process. Also bear in mind it is not the tools that do the diagnostics they are all an aid, a means to an end.

Also most of of the stuff is self taught because the advanced training required to work on and understand these systems is not available, esp to the aftermarket.

Many general garage repair technicians do not realise that the info/ codes on their scantool can be misleading or obscure and by trying to go on with a repair of a system that is beyond their understanding, either due to lack of training(whether self taught or otherwise) is not exactly in their customers interests.

Fitting parts because thats what the scanner said, or the dealer said they sell loads of em or both should not be the only criteria to take into account when attempting to diagnose/repair a vehicle. One example of this is the indicator on a Clio, I have fitted a few UCHs(body control module) to these for faults on Indicators. They have usually already had an indicator stalk by the time it gets to me and also most dealers would replace the indicator stalk first at the customers expense.
If you ring your dealer about one of these he will say they sell loads of indicator stalks for these. Can you see where I am going?

Darren has made an excellent reply to your post and made what I would call a valid comment about how a diagnostic specialist would approach the job.

you can't possibly approach the job in an informed manner with just a scanner.

So the frustration sets in when time and again we see coming into our workshops cars that have had all the obvious bits or the bits that the scanner said changed and the garage that bring the job to you talk the job down or suggest you don't charge them too much cos they have blown the customers budget on parts that are not needed.

I am not saying this is the case with you but maybe a little more info or details of tests carried out so far might avoid blunt statements which you take offense to from guys who have been posting on here from day 1.

    Best regards

    Mike
