    You were in the right area Aiden!
    I manged to remove the pot without breaking it as it is just clipped in at the bottom (NOT the metal tabs holding the base in place). I used a long screw driver to prise them away from the bottom of the pot and leaving the base connected to the tank. The return does indeed create a venturi effect which keeps the pot full when the pump is running and prevents air entering the fuel system when the fuel is low. 20L is the exact level when the problem starts. Under the pot I found some debris which looked like a bit of solder or silver foil and a bit of plastic, neither of which could be indentified. I think that these were getting pulled into the venturi and upsetting the effect. Car runs fine now.
