Mazda 323F 1.5 16 valve Year 2000 non stater Archived Message

I have this Mazda 323 1.5 16V petrol (old style 17 pin DLC under the bonnet). It came to me as a non starter & preliminary checks showed that there was no injection or ignition or fuel pump.

The ECU fuse was blown & there was no crankshaft sensor signal. Further checks on the crank sensor showed that the sensor was new, but had not been fitted correctly & was not close enough to the crank pulley to generate a signal.

So with a new fuse in & the CKP sensor signal intact I now have fuel pump relay activation & injector activation & wet plugs . The only thing lacking now is ignition. There are two coil packs fitted, of the type that fit directly onto one plug & a single HT lead that supplies the other opposing plug in a wasted spark arrangement.

The coils have three wires & after scoping all three together I am seeing ...

    NBV on one wire
    Earth on another
    ECU pulse on the third.
Amps clamp on the feed wire shows no current at all (sorry I cant be more specific)

My thoughts are that I am seeing all the conditions necessary for the coils to fire, but I struggle to accept that both have failed totally.

Also I have noticed that there is no "key" light on the instrument cluster. which makes me wonder if I have a transponder issue. I have been advised that the crankshaft keyway can wear on these & cause a loss of ignition, but I am still confused by my coil capture. I have checked that TDC on the front crank pulley does agree actual TDC on Piston crown height.

Any thought guys would be good!

    Cheers for reading
