VW Passat 1999. 1.8 non turbo ADR engine 20 valve - Rattle from rear of cam housing Archived Message

Hi, can anybody help please ? Car starts and runs ok, but when revved up and comes back to tick over there is a horrible rattle from the rear of cam housing, sounds like cam chain hitting cover. Scanned with Snappy and showed intermittent fault with cam timing electronic control. Tried running engine with control un-plugged and noise no longer there. Before I dismantle to investigate further does anybody know of a possible cause or cure.
