    Fitted new hydraulic tensioner/variable valve timing unit. This seems to have cured the problem,50 miles and no noise, but I still cannot understand why the noise dissapeared when the unit was un-plugged. As the fault code would not clear when the old unit was still fitted I suspect it must have been a fault with the solenoid valve, but this does not explain the reason for the noise. Does anyone have any sugestions??
