The 18V was a dud alternator which was replaced. It is possible that the overvoltage had damaged the original "anti-backfeed" diode as mentioned earlier.

I simply spliced a new (heavy duty) diode into the circuit near the alternator in order to make the vehicle useable rather than trying to pull the loom/dashboard appart trying to look for the opriginal one.

I cant help feeling that there is still something funny going on though because of the starter motor issue and the overtemperature lamp issue (neither work/illuminate with the alternator supply plug disconnected)

Which is whay an "accurate" wiring diagrame would be usefull (not a "typical" one such as Haynes and others are wont to provide)

BTW has anybody actually "repaired" an alternator recently? one used to be able to buy new componants such as voltage regulators but they just dont seem to be available any more, at least not off the shelf any way. (cant say im dissapointed)

    Paul
