Hi John. I can't see it being a speed sensor, as it wouldn't know whether it was going forwards or backwards, ?? Have a look at the back of the engine R/H side looking under the bonnet, there are some earth wires bolted to the bulkhead, they usually break off and cause this problem, extend the wires and it should be ok.
