Ford Escort 1996 1.6 Zetec - CVT - Struggles to provide power (like fuel starvation) Archived Message

Have a problem with this car, it has been in quite a lot over the past year or so with the same fault.
The engine runs sweet for ages, then suddenly (out of the blue, cannot simulate it to go faulty)the engine struggles to provide power (much like fuel starvation and/or cronic misfire). If the vehicle is coasted in neutral and revved this tends to clear it and the vehicle then runs fine for ages.
When we scan it a code for CID circuit failure is found every time. I have been informed by Ford that when this occurs the Camshaft ID sensor circuit drops out and the injection runs constantly rather sequentially (overfuelling).
We have changed the CID sensor, Lambda, Crank sensor, Coil pack & CTS. We also had the ECM tested by ATP, came back all OK. What we have noticed is that when the fault occurs, the diagnostic link is dropped and the emissions go sky high. Also the ECM gets extremely hot when fault occurs.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks Trevor
