Can anyone think of anything that might be causing MAP sensors to fail on one of these??(other than that they come in distinctive blue/yellow boxes )
It has gone through three (Four if you include the original OEM one!)over the last few weeks!
Now,to be fair, I cannot confirm that the "original" was actually faulty, the customer had already replaced it on the advise of another bcause the engine was running like poo. When that failed to cure the problem I was called in and discovererd that the head gasket had blown but on completling the work I found that it still ran badly and I discovererd that the MAP output was "Stuck" at 1.7 volts. The customer got his own replacement under warrently which worked fine for a couple of days before the MIL came on again and it ran badly. I discovererd that this time the output was "stuck" at 0v.
I got a replacement which again worked OK for a couple of days but, last night however, I got a call saying that it had (apparantly) failed again (MIL on, running badly). I will not be seeing the car for a couple of days (Van repairs! At 260,000 miles its entitled )
when I fitted my one I checked the socket to ensure that there was no voltage on the signal wire (Like a short to 12 v say) and it ran fine for 4 days!
So that is three (assuming that the most recent failure IS the map and not something else) failures in a row! I have had this with "Blue/yellow Boxes" before (Corsa coil packs! You end up doubting your diagnosis after a while )
Now the question is, are these failures down to dodgy replacement parts that are being made in a back room in Shizwan Province somewhere for 25c each? Or could there be somehing on the car that is damaging them??
Paul I think your fault lies within your car. I repair a lot of these beauties and that isn't a common fault. I know thats not much help, but you need to be looking at wiring or ECU problems, plenty of testing Im afraid.... Paul
Didn't these have a modification on the map sensor pipe work..... Its been a long time, but I think they fitted a vapor trap and moved pick-up to near brake servo pipe.... might be worth checking with Fiat. hth Nigel

Of course the question is...
Why do we use Intermotor??
Well we dont. The factors use intermotor and we use the factors!
If the dealers had the same delvery options and returns flexability as the factors they would have my exclusive custom, despite marginally higher prices (and I would tell my customers why and they would like it!)
But they dont so here I am (we are)
This isnt just irritating, or time wasting or even expensive. It is a disaster for the whole trade in the making.
All the "Right to repair" campaigns in the world will come to naught unless the independent factors stock and supply reliable spares!

Hi Paul, "Of course the question is...

You cant leave your reputation with your customers to be decided by the factors and what stock they hold. You are responible for what parts you fit or let you customers keep refitting and then keep retesting.
The factors will only stock what they will sell, if the trade didn't buy it then they would'nt stock it.But thats the problem in a nutshell this trade is full of fitters who have no idea of what the part they are fitting today does, should do, or even when it should do it!! (certainly not including yourself in this). The only thing they understand is money, the chepest part gets fitted, refitted, refitted, refitted + refitted. You need to explain to them how expensive intermotor parts really are ie you've already got a perfectly faulty part on the car which has cost you nothing why pay money to buy another faulty part.
Two options to deal with these idiots, 1 Refuse to work on a car until all IM crap has been removed and real parts fitted 2 Charge them a full min 1 hour each time you go back to say 'yea its that IM part again that I told you not to use'
