VW Polo 1.4 BBY 2003 Marelli 4MV - Ignition coil fault #

Engine Size *: 1.2
Engine Code *: not known yet
Year of Manufacture *: 2002

Had this in a few weeks ago,not firing on 1 cyl.Swapped coils round to see if it was a coil or something else.Replaced 1 pencil coil,then drove for 10 miles no prob.Thought i'd do an emissions test to check for cat damage and whilst running on the ramp another cyl went down again (different one).Replaced another coil and thought how lucky this happened before i gave the car back,explained it to the customer anyway.

Two weeks later customer rings up to say same thing again.I check and now yet another coil packed up! This time i replace the 2 remaining coils so now all 4 coils are new (geniune Bosch).Customer happy again.

He's just called again to say same thing happened again!

Any suggestions please before i look again next week? Any codes logged so far just say 'misfire on (relevant) cylinder'

is it possible that a spark plug could be shorting out or even the wrong ones fitted, i know with some Renaults they can cause all sorts of problems.

Thanks Lee, but not heard of this on VW's.Suppose i wont know any thing till Monday,but just thought someone else might have experienced this.
lets hope it's a completely different problem.

Hi Lee,

Hate these type of problems. You can disappear up your own backside trying to track the problem. I always change the plugs with coil pack problems unless they are obviously new. Reckon you are unlucky with a dodgy new coil pack which is not unknown. Worst part about it is what the customer is thinking. You do your best honestly and it goes tits up.

You say genuine Bosch....Are they? Factory genuine, or Bosch boxed (copies)?

We have that many problems with fuelparts VW ones, we only get them via TPS now....

Hi Colin,

I would agree with Pete and Tony, I suspect you have purchased a faulty coil and nothing more sinister than that.

These days more and more counterfeit and poor quality coils and other components are appearing at the factors. even to the point where the recognised bosch suppliers don't even offer you an option of bosch parts when you are pricing unless you ask for it!!

ECP have contributed mainly to this I feel and are forcing our once good suppliers to stock poor quality cheap garbage to compete.

It doesn't help that Most people in our trade are prepared to accept cheaper poor quality in order to boost their profits, Short term gain for long term detriment I feel.

Ignition coils fine-different fault!

Car in today and although i am totally confidant that the faulty coils i replaced were necessary,its actually now a different fault.
First i must say its actually an 03' 1.4 polo with a BBY engine, MARELLI 4MV mpi system (oops ,sorry!).Launch says p0301 cyl 1 misfire detected.
Worked out today that injectors have perm +ve with switched earth.
when prob occurs (intermittant)injector 1 switched earth greatly reduces in comparison to injector 2,3and 4.Pulled the connectors from the ECU to trace no 1 earth supply.Found the earth supply wire that connects to ECU ,but since i reconnected it,its been ok! If it aint broke i cant fix it!
I suspect duff ECU , but local VW dealer says never sold one!
I'll clean connector blocks properly tomorrow and run it around.Maybe it was just poor contact,but they sure looked clean.
I bet it'll be fine all day tomorrow,then soon as cust gets it back it'll play up again.Dont you just love these type of faults!

Anyone had similar earth or ECU probs on these?
