Honda Accord 1992 - Rough running, very rich #

Year of Manufacture *: 1994
Engine Code or Type *: F22
( Optional ) Scanner used: Hanatech

This car is running very rich, too rich to put analyser on. It is slightly intermittent but will always run rough within 10 min.

No DTCs

Low vacuum reading

Items the garage has substituted/tried, CTS, Distributor, ECU tried in another car, EGR blocked off, PCV checked, V-Tech oil pressure switch and solenoid checked. Fuel pressure and flow to spec. Compressions hot and cold. O2 sensor removed to check for blocked cat.

Injection running at about 4ms.

The only thing I can see that makes no sense is the ignition timing at idle is at about 60 deg! I realize that the ECU controls the ign timing, is there any other external influences which would cause this over advanced timing? It may be obvious but after looking at this car for so long i have started to glaze over.

Any thought would be great.

Hi Simon,

If it had been a late 80's Accord then I would have said check the mechanical advance weights in the distributor as they were probably stuck, but this won't apply on this ;-)

Have you checked the timing with the two pin SCS connector shorted as this should set it to base timing mode. Has the cam belt been changed? Perhaps check the cam timing given possible low vacuum. Also, the inlet valve clearance can go tight causing vacuum problems, but not usually this bad.

I have had this model with worn woodruff key in crank sprocket, crank pulley removal should confirm.

Faulty oxygen sensor? Can you make it switch at all? These do have a MAP sensor. should be under a plastic cover on the bulkhead, follow the rubber pipes back from the top of the throttle plate.

Hi guys

Checked the cam timing, checked the tappits.

The MAP sensor lives on the top of the trottle body and the garage have replaced it and I have tested it.

The one thinks I have found is, when cold we have a better vacuum and therefore the timing has come down to 15 deg until it gets hot and then the vacuum is lower and the rough running begins.

Tomorrow will be back at the garage to try to find where the vac is lost.

Hi Simon,
You've probably done it already but have you been round the inlet manifold gasket with some brake cleaner or WD40? I had one of these a couple of years ago that had ingested a small portion of its inlet manifold gasket, admittedly it did have a slight miss you could hear though.
A new gasket cured it.

The garage have had enough! They feel its mechanical and have told the customer that due to the age of the car it will cost far too much to be worth it, they have put in a whole load of hours into it which I dont think they will get back.
