Toyota Avensis 2.0VVTi 2004 - Cat efficiency, codes P0136 and P0430 - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2004
Engine Code or Type *: 2000 d4 vvti

This vehicle has flagged codes:-
p0136 o2 sensor circuit malfunction bank 1 sensor 2
p0430 Cat system efficiency below threshold bank 2
below are some snapshots of pre and post sensors at idle and 2000rpm. I only have a 2 channel scope so have treated bank 1 and bank 2 seperatly.

above is bank 1 at idle

above is bank 1 at 2000 rpm

above is bank 2 at idle

above is bank 2 at 2000 rpm

The car has two seperate cats one for bank one one for bank 2.

Am I correct in thinking that the switching on the post cat sensor on bank one is causing the cat efficiency code?

any opinions of the voltage post cat?

any help appreciated, would like to fix this first time as parts are expensive

Customer has decided that as a cat is £503 from toyota, he will live with the light on for a while....

Interestingly the toyota parts man said they had tried non gen cats in the past, due to expense, and had nothing but troubles....

Hi Nigel,

First impressions?
Both cats could be faulty, although on bank 2 it looks like there is a lot of oxygen exiting the cat (faulty cat? or sensor? or both).

As fot the high peak volts on both rear sensor, it may be a floating earth or a bad earth. I don't ever remember coming across a post cat sensor with a floating earth, but then again I don't scope many, so it is possible.

Customer finally bit the bullet and had a genuine cat fitted 3 weeks ago...... as yet fault has not returned....

It just had a cat, but the mechanic who fitted it cursed the heat shields....

Hi Kev

Are these heat shields now crucial for efficient catalyst light off? I thought they were just fitted to stop dry grass from catching fire & roasting unfortunate hedge hogs.
