VW Golf GTI AUM 2001 - Loss of turbo boost, fault Code P1279 - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2001
Engine Code or Type *: AUM
( Optional ) Scanner used: VAG COM

Hi,

Car pulls really well, boost pressure 10psi and then drops to 2 psi with obvious loss in power, checked dump valve it seems Ok but replaced to make sure, but made no difference. If I disconnect the vac line to the DV the car runs great with no problems. I checked the solenoid control valve for the DV and it seems to be working fine (ports opening and closing internal resistance all ok). Checked the archive but no luck there, any info greatly appreciated.

Hi

do you have the VAG code of description ?

Start by cleaning throttle body do basic reset on throttle as this can sort some boost fault codes

Does this motor have variable vain turbo?
We've just done one where the vane system was sticking. Got the turbo repaired and it wasn't expensive.

Hi there it could be worth checking air mass meter readings as have had problems with these before

VAG Code is...
17705 Pressure drop between Turbo and Throttle Valve
We checked the waste gate it isn't the variable type and the lever is free.
The car does not loose any boost with the dump valve disconnected so I would think this discounts any issues with the turbo or MAF.
Two incidental codes logged which haven't re-logged are..
17704 (P1296) Error in mapped cooling system. We changed the thermostat and temp sensor some 3 months earlier!
17545 Fuel trim: Bank 1 (add)System too rich.

Are you talking about the dump valve or the wastegate?

Dump valve? It's a vacuum operated dump valve, something is commanding it to dump the boost. So the solenoid is being operated by the ECU, which in turn is being driven by the sensors. So that doesn't eliminate MAF?

Has the vehicle been remapped? Jist a thot?

Hi
Check & then re check for air leaks, if you are 110% happy there are no air leaks anywhere Breather pipes / vacuum pipes / pressure pipes / intercooler. Then replace MAF (genuine only) & re adapt throttle body.

Hi

I have sorted this code twice with clean & reset of throttle, cost only a bit of time so worth a try.

clearly leaks need checking for as well and maf also

Thanks again to every one, I am talking about the DV (Dump Valve and not the waste gate) Owner needed the car back for work but when I get it back into the workshop I'll try what has been suggested, I'll keep you informed of progress.

Cleaned throttle and re-adapted, everythings seems Ok.

there should be an option on your scanner to do this, it is commanded via the serial link.

Make sure the throttle is cleaned first and no other fault codes logged.

Any problems, advise name of scanner you use and someone will help.
