Vauxhall Astra 1.6 Z16XE 2003 - Lack of power and stalling, code P0400 and P0130 - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2003
Engine Code or Type *: z16xe

afternoon 53 plate 1.6 astra customer complaied of stalling lack of power dropped car off took for road test drove perfectly code read p0400 p0130 fitted egr blank serviced car drove perfect,customer returns car 2 days later same fault stalling etc checked fault codes p0130 no1 lambda sensor fault checked lambda perfect , car running weak no signs of any airleaks map sensor reading at 3000 rpm 48kpa 2.5 v
cant get idle reading stalls bur readinging as it stalls 34kpa 1.2 v

gas readings at 3000rpm
co -0.00
hc 4ppm
co2 15.16%
o2 0.16%
lambda 1.01

any ideas obviously weak mixture but why thanks mick sorry for long post

hi just blank fitted but egr left connected but was the same with or without blank thanks mick

Hi Mick,

I see no evidence from the figures you have given that this vehicle is running lean. However that is not to say that at the time of this intermittent fault that the cause of the problem is a lean mixture. Is there anything to indicate a lean mixture in the Freeze Frame info? How bad is the lack of power? You can only go on what is presented in front of you and the customer must be made to understand this. My approach would be to clean the throttle body assy which can cause stalling and to change the Lambda sensor which,if stuck in the lean position on motorway runs, would cause the vehicle to "hold back". Incidently, I would expect MAP reading to drop back in a stall situation (result not the cause).

Not sure if this is the case but if you've blanked off the egr valve but not had it disabled then i think the ecu will react to the feedback voltage of an operating egr valve that may still stick open.

I've just had a similar problem with a Z16SE auto astra where the egr valve was faulty, i fitted a blanking gasket (1 port hole) and for some unknown reason it still caused running problems when the egr valve stuck open.

This can only be caused by the ecu altering timing/fuelling in response to feedback from egr position.

I'm happy to be corrected but this was fact with the Astra i had problems with as a new egr valve and gasket (2 port hole) has cured the fault.

putting my head above the wall to get shot down, but my understanding is that if the software isn't updated then the ecu is operating the egr valve but isn't noticing any change in the air flow, so flags a fault code.

You wont be, you're right.
It also affects idle air flow control depending if the EGR is opened or closed when returning to idle.

thanks for replys only code now active is p0130 which is no 1 lambda sensor no fault now active for egr valve have fitted new lambda sensor fault code will clear then returns for lambda sensor thanks

There are six possible P0130 fault codes for this system, which one is it? ie text

When you say
"checked fault codes p0130 no1 lambda sensor fault checked lambda perfect"
What did you check and how did you check it?

Do you think EGR has any affect on fuelling?

thanks for reply
fitted new original vauxhall lambda
fault code is p0130 circuit voltage low readings for lambda in live data drop to 0.2 or 0 volts with no switching

so has the new lambda sensor cured the fault. The only time i've had accurate fault codes for 02 sensors is when the heater circuit side breaks down (goes open circuit) which doesn't normally give a P0130 code.

Your lambda reading from you emission test is as near to perfect as you'll get.

afternoon yes egr has effect on fueling but have blanked off egr on other astras to prove egr faults and they have run ok this car will not idle, revs just die out' fitting new lambda has made no difference at all what would be normal ltfa readings thanks

LTFA, is that Long Term Fuel Trim,

I think at idle LTFT is around +-5% and anything above +-15% will start to cause a problem and log a fault code.

+ figures is add more fuel
- figures is less fuel required

Normally + add more fuel is caused by an air leak or a fuelling issue such as MAF but this uses a map sensor. I think low fuel pressure can cause issues as well but i would've thought this would be noticed whilst driving.

Is the 02 reading in response to an air leak and actually detecting a correct fuelling condition. If you squirt brake cleaner up the air intake does the 02 sensor react to a sudden rich mixture.

I do know that these Astra's suffer with the exhaust manifold cracking where the CAT is joined to it. This could cause the 02 sensor to see a lean mixture but the gas readings don't really agree with this idea.

Evening all,

The gas readings which Mick produced are at FAST idle. Any lean mixture caused by an air leak will best be shown on 02 reading at idle which we haven't seen yet. Has throttle body assy been cleaned yet and is there anything in freeze data?

fix fix replaced egr valve car ran ok lambda started switching could feedback from egr not fitted but blanked cause such poor running obviously it could thanks for input you live and learn
