Ford Fiesta 1.3 2002 - Siemens Simtec SIM21 Missing Coil Driver - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2002
Engine Code or Type *: Duratec/Rocam

The ECU on this vehicle appears to have lost one of its coil drivers. Checked for continuity of both lines to ECU plug. Just wondering which company would be the best to test & repair one of these?

Also, any hints & tips on disconnecting the ECU multiplug would be appreciated as it seems to be bolted up with an anti-tamper screw!

Hi Sean,
ATP electronics (01543 427900, Mike Walker posts here regularly) could also repair your ECU.
To remove the screw I use a Blue point "Grabit" extractor. It is a double ended bit intended to remove rounded out pozi screws. It has a left-handed drill bit one end and a left-handed screw type extractor on the other. I wrap tape around the bit until it is a good fit in the hole so it can't slip off centre when drilling. When the screw comes undone I leave the bit in place until the ECU is returned and I then use the bit to do the screw up again until the bit comes free.

The official 'Ford' way to remove these is to purchase a drilling guide which fits over the centre post and allows you to drill straight down the middle with a 6mm drill and drill the bolt out. ( Special Service Tool Ford Part Number - 418537). When we supply these ECUs or rebuild them , we supply on request a replacement bolt (Hex Head!) for the ECU to be refitted. We got fed up with people fitting the rebuilt ECU and having bad connections and reliability problems when they had fitted the ECU back without a bolt.

ECU now removed and off to the post office.....

I've recommended to the customer that coil, plugs and leads are changed as a matter of course with this just to reduce the chance of it happening again but the customer is complaining of lack of money at the moment. The genuine coil, leads and plugs is nearly £200+VAT which seems pretty steep compared to when we used to do Mondeo's etc.

What are the chances of the ECU failing again if he decides not to have the new parts fitted? Anyone hazzard a guess?

Chance,s of it happening again with-out replace the coil, leads and plugs almost 100%
I would not even fit the ECU with-out changing the above, because if you fit the ECU and it starts OK then after a minute,s running the coil driver gets spiked, do you think your cutomer will pay for the repaired ECU !!!!

Our local ECU repairer /supplier also supplies coils. we mostly buy as a pair from them in these situations. May be worth a call Cheers Aidan

The minimum you must do is put a waiver on the invoice and get him to pay before he takes the car.

Thanks to everyone for their comments and suggestions.

ECU was removed and sent to ECU Technologies for test & repair.

New Ford coil was fitted before the ECU was refitted.

Vehicle roadtests fine and now sent back to the customer.
