Fiat Punto 1.2 2001 - Intermittent non start - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2001
Engine Code or CC *: 1200

Can not find fault on this one, drives fine, fuel guage drops and light flashes while driving. If it is switched off will not restart for an hour or two. Fault is intermittant.

Please help!

Hi Adrian,

I think there are a few guys out there who would love to help but I think you are gong to have to fill in a few gaps. Ie: Fault Codes? Is there a spark or fuelling when the vehicle is a non-starter? More info required please.

I think your problem may be with the swirl pot in that it cannot fill quick enough due to the part that acts as a one way valve restricting the fuel from entering it. I have removed this on a Punto before with no noticable side effects for the customer. A fuel pressure and flow check will show this up. Schrader valve on the fuel rail so hook up is easy.

thanks for the replies,forgot to mention car has recurring 0500 vehicle speed sensor fault but has no sensor fitted .also steering light is on when fault apparent ,wont do it at all today though!

Evening Adrian,

Sounds like you have a Crank Sensor problem. If you can't scope it when in a non start situation,then fork out for another one - they are cheap enough.

That rules out my suggestion then as I didn't have any other faults. Sounding more electrical now then. Is your code definitely correct and what scan tool was it pulled with? If it was vehicle speed sensor I would have thought this would only affect the idle speed and possibly cut out when coming to a stop but not cause a non start. Would the code be for engine speed sensor instead? Maybe it's more like a crank sensor fault, as Pete mentioned, that goes open circuit when hot or maybe a power supply to/from ecu etc that also affects the steering circuits operation. Can you get comms with the steering to see what codes are there?
I think you'll have to hook up a few circuits and run it until it plays up again and try to narrow down where the problem lies through what signals you loose. Just out of curiosity I would purposely stall the car to see what happens regarding the fuel gauge and steering light when the car cuts out. It wouldn't surprise me if there is more than one fault. I think you'll have to do some more testing and tell us what you have managed to eliminate (spark, injector switching, fuel pressure, ecu power and ground etc).

When it plays up a light flashes (what light?) and the steering light comes on. That sounds like you have CAN issues. I saw one with similar symptoms before due to a shorted CAN. In my case the radio was faulty.

took the punto for a long drive today ,the fault only happens when hot .turn it off and it wont restart for about 2 hours .fuel pump doesnt run when cranking and no spark .no rpm measured on diagnostics (sp acr4)when cranking .seems like crank sensor but why the dash lights .will fit a sensor tommorrow anyway .car has been to main dealer but they couldnt sort it out .I dont want it to beat me !

the punto has gone at last.replaced the multi function unit behind fusebox,wasnt too dear £135+vat recon from fiat. thanks for the input chaps!

we looked at a wiring diagram and found the warning lights,fuel gauge,fuel pump, and the radio had stopped working, are all controlled by the multifunction unit.dont know how to test this unit so it was still a bit of a gamble! It also doesnt need coding
