Mercedes Benz C200 2.0 2003 (53) - Intermittent misfire, code P0301 #

( Optional ) Scanner Used: Modis

Hi guys, we have this (203) c class which is really giving us grief and i am now asking for any help you may offer. It came in with an intermittant missfire and produces a p0301 code, initially changed plugs and after a few days replaced the coils as missfire was still present. We then carried out an extensive road test and witnessed the missfire as it pulled up to the workshop.it will continue to missfire until the engine is switched off,we then restarted it imedietly and the engine ran fine until several more miles were covered,then it will missfire when brought to idle. We have checked compressions and number 1 cyl is slightly lower than the other 3 but nothing i would consider too low. The injectors have been rotated to different cyls and the ECU has been repaired ( this did have a fault found under test ),have diconnected the wiring loome as best i can to check for any oil ingress, none found. If any one could shed some light my way it would be greatly appreciated, before i run out of hair

Have you tried a forum search on MB misfires, sure there are a few problems with MAF's to consider

thanks for that Aidan it has had a new MAF fitted aswell, albeit not by us,the owner of this car occaisionaly works in France and a MB dealer fitted one for the same fault a few weeks before he brought it to us.

Dave,

Is it not possible to scope the coil packs when the misfire is present. Assuming the plugs are OK you can then eliminate (or not) an ignition mis-fire. You are then down to a fuelling or mechanical problem. By under-taking a 4 gas emission check you can then determine whether you are looking at a fuelling or mechanical problem. If this beast has hydraulic valves, you might have a valve stick problem which can be eliminated by using FORTE treatment.

I had one that misfired like yours but it did it as we accelerated away. we could drive it carefully and it would drive fine all day, but if we tried to acellerate quickly it would shut an injector down and it would log an injector fault.

we eventually put this problem down to low compression on no 4 cylinder. ( 10% down on the other 3 )

This one had been at a mercedes dealer for several weeks and they had tried plugs, leads, coils, maf, etc etc ( Even though they knew that we had already done that ) and wanted to fit a wiring harness and an ecu. the customer obviously backed off before it got too expensive.

Alan Kane told me about one that he had with the same symptoms, which turned out to be burnt valves. ( i think )

There should be something in the archives about it. ?

need to know what engine this has in it. 111 engine silver cam box or the 271 engine black cam box.

I suspect it is the 271 engine and these are notorious for burning out valve seats. The fact that you can switch off the engine and restart it and its ok for a short while points me to that conclusion.

Mercedes had a software flash for the ECU that knocked out the pick up of the sensitivity of misfires. This can only be done with a Mercedes STAR machine (genuine one) but obviously the head needs to be repaired first of all.

Thanks for that fellas, i didnt think that the slightly lower compression would make that much difference, but obviously it can. Think i will get this back in and just double check everything before i take the head off. Would this not affect the vacuum results ? i am pretty sure the vac was nice and steady.

Darren, yes it is a 271 engine, will have a chat with the owner i think to see if he wants to continue feeding his hard earned to it. Thank you very much you may just have kept my hair dresser in business

Darren- it might be worth smoke testing the inlet circuit. The 271 engine has a small breather hose that goes soft & ruptures. You cannot see it with the air filter housing & air mass meter in place but smoke pouring out from the underside is enough to warrant taking apart & having a look. Also if you can check the adapted engine values you might find they are out of range- particulary at idle. If the hose is the fault- you will have to reset the adapted values after it's been replaced.

Great point Neville but have seen this generate a misfire fault code, but still worth checking

I have got this car back in again and in the process of removing the head, could someone give me the procedure to remove the vvt units before i undo them and find they explode in my hands.

just a quick update, removed the head this morning and found a damaged exhaust valve. Now the owner just has to decide what he wants me to do with it. Many thanks for your input guys.

Well this Merc has been running perfectly for a few weeks now, so thank you for the input. We sourced a recon head as the owner didnt want to pay Mercedes prices, assembled with genuine merc gaskets and it started on the button. life is a joy once more.
