Landrover Freelander 1.8K Series 1999 - Emission failure, high CO and HC #

Year of Manufacture *: 1999
Engine Code or CC *: 1800 k series
( Optional ) Scanner Used: verus

Car failed test on all emmision through the roof,
co=11.5
hc=1700
lambda=.998
rpm=2500
manifold vaccum is at 12inhg which is low, fault code on vehicle is manifold absolute pressure sensor but this is ok because if i take vaccum pipe off my live data shows 1010mbar which i believe to be correct and the garage the car has come from have put a new cat, lambda and sent ecu off and had new map sensor fitted. Have just checked the timing as i thoght this could be the only thing left that could cause low vac in manifold but to my dissapointment is perfect at tickover the co is fine.

Ps have smoke tested inlte and the is no leaks

What is the hc at idle? This engine suffers from burnt valves or seats moved due to overheating. might be worth a compression test.

Hi Carl,

I'm with Kelly on this one and suspect an engine fault which includes a head-gasket problem. Compression check is vital and in the absence of idle readings, I assume it was a pass in this respect. However, I would be interested to see what those figures are esp. HC and o2. What does the car run like?

Was the vac reading off live or actual ? have you cross checked the two.

You checked the cam timing, but did you look to see if crank pulley had moved on crank ? I agree compression test it vital next step

A pre sensor leak could cause the emission fault, but not sure would have such dramatic effect on vacuum.

Interesting that the Lambda reading was OK, surprising with such high CO. Can you post the oxygen reading and lambda sensor voltage reading

Thanks for all the quick responses I did check crank pulley and was all ok but will post all gases tommorow after compresion test (if its ok) can't believe I didn't do a compression check tho sounds obvious now

Nice one Carl,

Agree with Aiden, them there Lambda readings seem out of sync with CO readings. Expect a lot lower than .998.

you guys were right must of read my print out wrong yesterday lambda is at .889 didnt get time to do a full emmisions test on it today but have done a compression test where all 4 cylinders were at 200psi done another smoke test and again no leakes bit of a strange one i think any help appreciated.

Hi Carl,

How does the car run? Need to see full emission figures. Here is a question which will have you disappearing up your own back-side! Is the vauum low because it is over-fuelling or because of an engine problem - which will cause it to over-fuel. In these situations I like to apply vacuum at 20"hg independant of the engine which might show something. Assuming the ECU is OK, I still think you have an engine problem - although I would expect to see high HC at idle.

Thanks for your reply peter when you drive the car it is gutless have removed exhaust to see if that was blocked which made no difference I think I get what your saying its like the chicken or the egg will post emmisions tommorow

Hi Carl,
I had one of these a couple of years ago with similar problems. Turned out after much investigation that the bolt holding the pulley to the exhaust cam was loose. This had opened the key way in the pulley a bit and squashed the roll pin in the shaft oval. The amount of play was (from memory) only about .7mm which equated to about 1/2 a tooth at the perimeter. It made the engine run like a dog with a tendency to stall and low vacuum. I seem to remember I got cam sensor codes on this one. Might be worth checking cam pulleys as well as the crank one.

Hi Don't no if you had the problem resolved, I only just log on for the year. I had a similar problem with a 2000(W Reg ) The cutomer said the car had problems with the Emission the previous year. I carried out a leak detection test and it turned out the Cylinder Head gasket had a leak resulting in the O2 sensor not registering correct reading and ECU was compensating fuel.with the amount of fuel the New CAT could be rendered useless very quickley
