SAAB 93 2.0 2000 - Non start, no fault codes (waveform) - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2000
Engine Code or CC *: 2.0L Turbo
( Optional ) Scanner Used: Tech 2

Hello All

I Have the above vehicle in as a non start
No fault codes
When Engine is cranked it is firing the injectors but has No spark (Red cdi pack)

Tested good live and ground at coil pack
Scoped the trigger lines at coil

Question is is this a good trigger for this vehicle

I haven't got a specific trace saved from one of these, but it looks ok to me. The triggers would be clearer if you reduced the time scale. Coil packs are a common failure on these though.

I did one of these last week, and took traces from the coil, unfortunately its at work, but I'll get it tomorrow.

Mine was the coil pack (red), no fault codes stored, but thats where my problems started......

Customer was unwilling to pay for a genuine coil (£245), so decided to source his own. Euro car parts £80.... lasted 1 week, then intermittent no start.

Second coil from ECP wouldn't even start car....

ECP then refused exchange or refund, even though the car ran fine with donor coil from my own car.

Customer then sourced Intermotor coil from local motor factor,£200, this lasted 12 hours before developing secondary misfire.

Again car ran fine with my genuine coil fitted, so I purchased a coil from saab fitted it, and told the bloke to come back and pay in a week if he had no more problems....

He has paid...

Moral of the story.... Don't compromise your reputation with inferior quality parts. But I do think I've gained a customer because of the extra effort I put in....

Anyway , Your firing traces look a little short, I'm sure mine were more of a square wave..... will try and post tomorrow....+

Some of these have a seperate self test and fault codes for internal Ignition Discharge Module faults which can be ran on the Tech 2.
Its in a sub menu when you go into the engine manangement system Terry, very usefull if it has it as any I've had not starting have always came back with a fault code for an internal fault in the Ignition Discharge Module and been right!

Blue- firing signal for one cylinder
Red - amps clamp on earth wire (I think...)

Engine was running, with intermotor coil fitted.

Fitted a genuine coil pack supplied from Euro car parts £185 and worked a treat
Interesting they are supplying genuine units Now for these...

Keep your fingers crossed !! I have had two "genuine saab" !! coil packs from ECP fail on the same vehicle within 10 days

Dealer supplied coil has been on over a year.

Looked at this one for another garage and said at the time i was not 100% sure about the diagnosis of a coil and would find out.

Anyway garage didn't want to wait and fitted a coil.

Would assume the waveform would be the same as before as the signal is only a trigger from the ecu to the amplifier in the CDI coil pack and wouldn't show any other LT/HT Info.

But unfortunately I was unable to confirm this

The genuine coil packs have SAAB and made in sweden cast into the underside of the red plate, the waste of space sh*t copies do not. They do however have an identical 'use resistor spark plugs sticker' on the underside, but the non genuine ones fall off as soon as the engine gets warm.....

Here is a waveform from a known good CID system....

I could have done with a couple more channels to be honest!

Incidentally there is a good coil in a roadside bin in Sheffield somewhere. A customer of mine decided that his car needed one, after it broke down & exhibited exactly the same symptoms as when he had a CID coil pack failure a year earlier. He walked miles to the dealer to buy one & when he fited it, the engine started. He broke down 30 miles later & I went on to diagnose a crank sensor fault.

Customers know best hey!

Strangely enough I have just had one of these come my way via my MOT garage, initially multiple misfire codes logged , GSF coilpack fitted which then generated a load of spurious fault codes similar to the old NGK plug faults which are well documented here , it appears as though ECP and GSF are selling poor quality chinese clone coilpacks in GM boxes, giving the impression they are genuine, the way to tell as I am led to believe is that a genuine coilpack has a barcode top and bottom of the parts label, the clones don't have the bottom barcode?

The garage that I gave this info to are now chasing up through Trading Standards so will keep you all informed on the outcome.
