Mazda MPV 2.3 DOHC 2002 - Burning oil after timing chain / engine rebuild #

Year of Manufacture *: 2002
Engine Size and Code *: 2.3 DOHC (Ford Engine?)

Timing Chain slipped and caused valves to break and create a hole in Piston No.3 and severely damaged cylinder head. After replacing piston and head with second hand parts the car is excessively burning oil. We have replaced all valve stem oil seals etc but when carrying out compression test the results are way off the gauge. The engine seems to be breathing ok.

Any body have any ideas?

Hi David,

I know this is a long time coming but we experianced the same problem on some Vauxhalls, when the pistons strike the valves the rings get pinched in their grooves and fail to function correctly.

Hi David,
Second hand parts? Does that include the rings? I would have put in a new set of rings and still would have checked the gaps (of all rings) along with doing a cylinder de-glaze. Compressions "way off the gauge". Do you mean they are good? Good compressions does not mean that the oil control rings are ok.

were going to try a new EGR valve to see if that helps. Have fitted another reconditioned engine and we still have same problem. Everything leads to EGR so will fit when arrives and let you know.
