Ford Mondeo 1.8 2005 - Noisy timing chain - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 05
Engine Size and Code *: 1.8

Timing chain noise present. Not serious but noticable. We dont wish to go for a replacement chain as yet but would like the noise to be less noticable.

Has anybody experimented with diferent grade oil on these to quieten them down a bit or is the only cure a replacement.

Are you 100% sure its the timing chain ?? and whats the engine code.

No, not really. The engine is just generally "Tappitty/rattely" IYSWIM.
Its not bad, just irritating.

The car is high milage (100,000 plus) but otherwise in good (Excellent actually) condition. The noise is noticable but not really bad enough to justify any extensive (Or expensive) investigation.

This is one of those situations where I cannot believe I am the only person who has seen this and am just wondering how others might have experimented/dealt with it.

I am minded to try a racing grade oil as an experiment (EG 10-50 or 10-60 even) but I am concerned that I do not know if there is likly to be a down side

(My past expriance is that ZETEC type engines do not work well with "conventional" thicker grades of oil such as 20-50 (I have never put 20-50 into a ZETEC but I have come across customers who have done so, and it is not good!))

As I said, I am just wondering what others might have tried before me as it were.

Hello paul,
Does this one have swirl flaps in the inlet manifold? If so they make a tappety/rattly noise.Sorry if it seems an obvious suggestion to you. I expect that you have already come across the worn swirl flaps before.

From memory i have changed 1 chain and about 20 inlet manifold,s on these, and about 10 of those have been diagnosed as chain,s before they got to me.

I will be seeing the car tomorrow so I will let you know.

I had the manifold off about a year ago to deal with an air leak and the flaps seemed OK back then but they might be worth a second look.

Hi Paul,
If you haven't had any luck tracing this noise yet could you supply the engine code or reg of the vehicle? It's not a Mondeo SCi is it? (Or am I the only person that works on these?)
They have the direct petrol injection engine in those. The engine code of the one's I work on is CFBA. Is yours the normal fuel injecton set-up? Just a thought as the noise may be coming from a different area of the engine than you think.

Helpful Hint!

If you reach down and put a finger tip on the little lever (Or the tip of a long screwdriver) that operates the flap mechinisim (Just behind the throttle body) one can easily feel the vibration and "relate" it with the noise as the throttle is blipped.

Do these break up if left unrepaired (IE is this a "Live with it for now" or a "Fix it immediatly" issue?)

The owner was minded to replace the car soon but will fix it if he keeps it. He just hasnt made his mind up yet. I am just wondering how much "Presure" I should apply (IYSWIM

Hello Paul,
One of the first ones i saw, the customer decided to leave it, then one day (a few months later), I got a call to say he had a funny noise & the engine stopped. One of the flaps had been ingested by the engine, breaking two valves & sticking them sideways into the top of the piston. The second replacement engine that he had also developed a rattle after a while, which he hadn't noticed until I pointed it out to him after a service. On that one I removed the flaps all together & blamked off the holes & its' been driving fine since. On another one I replaced the manifold with a new one, which I think cost around £500-£600, but the driver thought it better to replace it than have the worry of it going bang at any moment.

Paul,
I had one where a flap was totally detached and was rocking back and forth between the two inlet ports, it was kidney shaped! I was called out for a MIL on. The operating shaft had snapped in two, moved inwards along its length, giving an air leak and misfire on no.1. Manifold assy £200,
