Vauxhall Omega 3.0 1995 - Will not rev over 3000 rpm, fault code 19 - Fixed #

Engine Size and Code *: 3.0
( Optional ) ECU Type: Motronic
( Optional ) Scanner Used: Autodiagnos
( Optional) Fault Codes: 19 Incorrect ROM Signal

Hi

This car will not rev over 3000rpm. DTC 19 incorrect RPM signal is logged. I have scoped the cam and crank and can see no fault with it when the problem happens.

The car will drive OK from cold for the 1st 5 min then it will fault.

It feels like the Mondeos that will not rev over 4000rpm when at stationary. I have looked at live readings and the gear P/N voltage does not change. I have checked at the range switch on the box and the voltage does change from 0v in N to 0.30v in drive. The live readings may be a bum steer!

I do have TIS2000 but there are no wiring diagrams for early Omegas, if anyone has on it may help.

I think you will find this is Motronic 2.8.1.Even though your scope signal looks ok,it is possible the part of the signal is going to ground via the earth screen in the tdc sensor cable.Do you remember the 90s astra model that would not run properly unless the earth screen cable to the sensor was cut?The Bosch system on these is generally very reliable and tbh and if I recall the tdc sensor was the only weak component.If you are still in bother ,I have an original GM wiring diagram for this model,On paper!

but I'm fairly sure it is the same as the on the Bosch esi.hth

Hi

I tried removing the earth to the CAM sensor but all that did was trigger an 'open' code for that sensor.

The system is a Bosch 2.1.8

Just an added piece of info, this car will respond fine untill it warms up, then DTC will return and the engine feels like it is hitting a 'limiter' again.

Is there any chance that you can scan the wiring and email it?

This thing comes up with DTC 19 which means nothing to me. Is there a GM 'P' fault code stored?

There's plenty on Autodata for this engine.

I would be inclined to scope the wires on a test route when the car is fine and when it faults. Then you can compare the signal and see whether it's going high/low, missing etc

Why did you remove the earth wire on the CAM sensor?
I am struggling to follow your diagnostic route?

I am well aware of when EOBD codes came into force, which is why I specifically asked if there were any GM P codes which as you should know pre-dates EOBD.

Coil packs corrode but thats a misfire problem.

I agree with Kevin except it appears that the Crank Sensor appears to scope OK when the fault occurs. However, what I have found on some Vauxhalls with this problem is that I would get a fault code relating to VSS/RPM sensor when in fact it refers to the Crank Sensor. I would expect a crank sensor fault to be logged if this component is playing up. This the reason why I want to see DTC 19 clarified.

Hi guy,

The only code I do get is the code 19, no P codes, this is on AD scanner.

I removed the earth from the crank sensor [sorry for the above typo saying 'CAM sensor'] because of the advice above.

I have scoped the CAM and Crank together hot and cold, when it is and when it is not faulting and I cannot see any 'drop out' in the readings.

Starting to feel like my dog when she has her tail in her mouth!

Code 19 on Motronic 2.8.1 is RPM signal or RPM circuit,interrupted signal.
Code 19 on Motronic 2.8.3 is crankshaft position sensor A circuit malfunction (and it can be displayed/read as P0335) so perhaps that explains when GM P codes came in (about 1996)

Hi

This may be a long shot, but thought worth a mention.
I had on of these ( A bit later model) with a crank sensor fault code.(and intermittent poor running)
We traced problem to a faulty HT plug lead. The crank & plug leads ran in close proximity at rear n/s/r of engine. The fault with the lead was causing interference with crank signal.

Hi Simon, can you post the cam and crank waveforms cold (without fault) and hot (with fault)?
please record Rpm for both traces.

PS. Although it may seem straight forward, have you carried out a resistance and insulation test on the circuit (at the ECU when the fault is present)

Not sure you got a wiring diagram yet, but if not crank sensor use,s pin,s 48 and 49 at ECU.
But as it,s on Auto-data,Vivid,Tolerance, Caps and ESI i wonder why you have no wiring diagram ??

It might be useful if we could see the original cam/crank waveform, so that we could learn what to look for in a faulty signal.

I don't suppose you took a capture once it was fixed did you?
