Rover 25 1.4 K Series 2000 - Rough running, code P0170 fuel addaption #

Engine Size and Code *: 1.4 K SERIES
( Optional ) ECU Type: MOTAROLA
( Optional ) Scanner Used: SOLOUS PRO
( Optional) Fault Codes: P0170 FUEL ADDAPTION

HI GUYS HAVE A LOOK AT THIS ONE SEE IF YOU CAN PUT SOME LIGHT ON IT FOR ME.CAR WILL START AND RUN FINE THEN IT WILL START TO RUN ROUGH OR WILL START RUNNING ROUGH AND THEN RUN FINE.YOU GET A P0130 02 SENSOR FAULT AND OR A P0170 FUEL ADAPTION FAULT.WHEN CAR CAME TO ME THERE WAS A UNIVERSIL 02 SENSOR FITTED THAT WAS NOT EVEN PLUGED INTO THE ENGINE LOOM I CONECTED THE 02 SENSOR AND WATHCHED THE LIVE DATA THE 02 SENSOR DIDNT REACT TO AN AIR LEAK OR ADDING OF SOME CARB CLEANER. FITTED NEW 02 SENSOR NOW HAVE 02 SENSOR READINGS BUT STILL RUNS ROUGH.THE ONLY THINGS I CAN SEE ON LIVE DATA IS WHEN THE FAULT HAPPENS THE FUEL FEED BACK RELAY SWITCHES FROM OFF TO ON ???? AND THE MIXTURE ADDAPTION SWITCHES FROM 100% TO 70%. THE CAR IS RUNNING VERY LEAN ACORDING TO THE VOLTAGE OF THE 02 SENSOR.AND THE VERY ODD TIME YOU WILL GET A MISSFIRE COUNT ON CYLINDERS 1 AND 2.CAR HAS GOOD FUEL PRESURE GOOD PLUGS LEEDS ECT ANY THOUGHTS PLEASE ???????

do you have access to a smoke machine?...... I'm thinking air leak, maybe plastic inlet manifold....
have you had a spray round with carb clean or similar to check?

just suggestion, trying to help.....

possible issue with MAP sensor or pipe work ?

Loose front pulley & cam timing can give interesting faults to

First knock your CAPS off. Can you post basics carried out, Compressions,fuel pressure and 4 gas readings, these and Nigels and Aidans request,s would give us an idea on the way forward.

Sorry first time using.Getting a lend of somke pro first thing in the morning. Compression is good on on cylinders. fuel presure is 3 bar no acess to 4 gas.

manifold vacuum is 450-500 mmhg the needle dances bettween at idle

car was on smoke pro no leaks. found my vacuum tester was found to be faulty. vacuum reading is 475mmhg when running well and 300mmhg when running rough.

Hi Aaron,

I think it would help if you invested or at least have access to a 4 gas analyser to do these sort of jobs. Would be interested to know what they are before and when vehicle runs rough. I am thinking along the lines of either an engine or ignition misfire. What plugs have been fitted and have you any means of seeing the spark at all four cylinders. If you have a timing gun, you could use this to detect a misfire by watching the flashes..

when running rough lamda was 2.79 or there abouts thats all i noted down when it was on a 4 gas today. im not big up on useing a 4 gas but im prity sure thats lean.new bosh plugs fitted. when runnig rough there isnt alwas a missfire count and iv tried coils from aknown good car and checked the wireing to the ecu ??????

Hi, The P0170 code should have either an upper or lower limit reached/exceeded, which end of the fuel trim is your code setting?

The reason for asking is that something does not sound right in the data that you have posted so far.

mark the fault is word for word p0170 fuel system adaptation out of range and p0130 02 sensor front sensor 1 that is all word for word off the solous.I cant get my head round it at all. could this be intermitent sticking valves ?????

Hi Aaron,

Never seen a Lambda reading that high! Mind you mine only reads as high as 1.50 and rarely seen that exceeded. So...the ignition system seems ok, and no air leaks. Fuel pressure should be checked if not already done so. If that is ok...then might be an engine problem. Not sure if it is fitted with secondary air pump but can't see that as a problem. High Lambda as you say indicates too much O2 which could be caused by a lean mixture. Without proper 4 gas readings we could be shooting in the dark...

Have you checked all key ways/pins on cam/crank gears seen slight wear on these cause lots of problems sticky valves is a possibilty but your vaccum could drop due to rough running but a definate chance it could be sticking valves maybe worth a good engine flush to see if it helps any

You say you have fitted a new lambda, what make is it as these can be a bit of an arse and not see the lambda working correctly.

I usually fit bosch and then reset all adaptions and not have any problems.

Not seen any sticking valve probs on these for a long time now but a lot of cam timing issues where people have fitted belts or done heads and got it wrong or left the crank pulley slightly loose causing wear.
