Year of Manufacture *: 2002 Engine Size and Code *: 1.8 N42 Valvetronic ( Optional ) Scanner Used: DIS/GT1
Got the above car in that keeps throwing the following codes:
------------------------------------------ 285E – VARIABLE VALVE GEAR – CONTROL UNIT – INTERNAL FAULT – ROM FAULT CURRENTLY NOT PRESENT
A FAULT HAS OCCURRED IN THE TESTED FUNCTION. GENERAL FAULT, VARIABLE VALVE GEAR – REDUCED OUTPUT
EMERGENCY POSITION (MAXIMUM VALVE OPENING) OF VARIABLE VALVE TIMING GEAR WAS REQUESTED DUE TO ANOTHER FAULT CODE ENTRY. THE EMERGENCY POSITION COULD NOT BE REACHED.
A FAULT HAS OCCURRED IN THE TESTED FUNCTION. A60210 VARIABLE VALVE TIMING GEAR CONTROL UNIT DEFECTIVE – INTERNAL FAULT. FAULT IS CURRENTLY NOT APPLICABLE FAULT DURING TEST OF INTERNAL CONTROL UNIT HARDWARE.
2865 – VARIABLE VALVE GEAR – POWER LIMITATION IN LIMP-HOME OPERATING MODE. FULL LIFT POSITION CANNOT BE ACHIEVED. FAULT CURRENTLY NOT PRESENT. FAULT WOULD CAUSE WARNING LAMP TO ILLUMINATE. ------------------------------------------
Car drives fine for a while after reset then EML light appears and a drastic reduction in power (wont go over 7mph!).
Symptoms started suddenly and seemed to be coincidental with the owner driving over a kerb an banging the rear exhaust box on it! i've checked the O2 sensors and the wiring and all looks OK under there.
I've removed and checked the valvetronic motor and it appears to be ok and free to move, checked the valve lift mechanism and cant find anything unusual, checked the wiring from the motor to the ecu plugs for condition & continuity - all OK.
I suspect a faulty valvetronic ECU but wanted to ask if anyone else had seen this before forking out for an expensive electronics box?
The way I would see it, the first code is telling you that there is a problem in the ECUs’ software. The second code is logged because the same software is not happy with a feedback signal. When you know the software is faulty I don’t see any good reason to trust it. I also don’t see the logic in looking at replacing hardware because its software is faulty.
Its your call, but I would update it before doing anything else.
