Renault Clio 1.2 2005 - Misfire #

Year of Manufacture *: 2005
Engine Size and Code *: 1200
( Optional ) Scanner Used: KTS /SOLUS PRO /PICO SCOPE
( Optional) Fault Codes: none

HI guys this one is driving me daft misfire worse under load. Compessions all around 200 psi, new coil tried ht leads tested, new plugs fitted, injectors scoped, smoke tested for air leaks, gas readings ok, I have had a few of these. One I have cured, one has been traded in and the other still has an intermittent misfire there are no fault codes to indicate which cylinder is misfiring

Any input would be much appreciated cheers

Hi John,

Is this thing 8 or 16v? No sign of tracking on HT leads? What type of plugs and part number? How did you cure the other one? All basic questions which I am sure you have considered.

The problem now of course assuming that you are confident it is not fuel or ignition related is to consider whether it is an engine or ECU problem. My next step if it has hydraulic valves would be to change the engine oil with a flush and dose it with Forte Gas treatment and let the customer try if for a week or so. This will give you a bit of breathing space to consider where to go next.

Hi John,

Scoping injectors in my experience is not always enough, you may have to remove them and have them bench tested. The fact that the problem is under load may suggest an injector partially blocked can you see what the O2 sensor is doing under load? It may point you towards a fueling problem.

I would think not a genuine coil ??, as i,m sure it would come complete with H/T leads.
Genuine plugs ? Engine code ? as some do suffer from sticky valves.

As Kev has suggested, only fit a genuine coil. I've fitted non gen ones before and they either still misfire or run even worse!!

You need to determine whether its ignition/fuel/cylinder issue and then move on logically from there.

what is the O2 sensor reading whilst it is misfiring?

Do you have an adapter to scope the ignition pattens?

Can you overlay the above with the APP and AMM/MAP outputs?

Thanks for the responce guys the customer has decided to trade the car in but just to answer some of your questions ,yes it was a genuine coil its the later type with seperate leads I tried new leads as well ,still the same,O2 sensor reading was normal . I think if the vehicle was still here it would have been head off thanks again for the input I just hope I dont get another clio for a while.

Had a 16 valve one with similar symptoms. Tried 2 coils in it believing the first one had to be faulty. Eventually checked current draw to injectors. No 2 injector current was dropping out intermittently. I would have sworn it was ignition related as it only happened under load and was very random. The codes did not always pick the cylinder either generally random miss or sometimes cylinder No 3.

Just had similar thing on a clio found the faault was in the engine wiring harness wires had gone brittle and started to break up internally.
This was a 2003 car things still bad with the French wiring me thinks.

Hi guys We 8 valve2003 clio very slight misfire no2 and no3 cylinder compression test 200psi on2+4 cylinders and 160psi on2+3cylinders removed head to find gasket had thin line worn between 2+3 cylinders and NOT into cooling system,replaced gasket solved misfire.Every week I see many different problems
