Renault Megane 1.4 16V 2003 - Misfire, codes P0304 & 09474 - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2003
Engine Size and Code *: 1.4 16V
( Optional ) ECU Type: Siemens
( Optional ) Scanner Used: Snap On Modis
( Optional) Fault Codes: P0304 & 09474

Vehicle was presented with misfire. Have swapped coil packs and plugs which makes no difference. When I plug off cylinders 1 and 4 at idle it seems to have less of an effect than cylinders 2 and 3 - which leads me to believe it is a 1 an 4 problem. Do injectors give trouble on these?

Snap on scanner gives codes P0304 and 09474.

Any help appreciated... thanks!

Due to the way these work, if you are pulling the plug to the pencil coil,s ? it is not a valid test.

Evening Roger,

If you post the 4 gas readings that might give us a clue on which direction to proceed. I assume the misfire is across the rev-range.

Kev...Your point intrigues me..are you inferring that the ECU will shut off the injector? If that is the case then a proper test would be to pull the coil and attach a spark jumper to protect any damage to the ECU etc.

The coils are wired in series, so cylinders 1 & 4 or connected together, as well as 3 & 2. So Pete's right, you cant just disconnect one coil to locate which cylinder is misfiring. I've had a lot of problems with injectors on Clio's, so that may well be a good place to start looking on this one. Not always easy to detect electrically as they appear to fail mechanically, hence the ECU wont pick it up as a circuit fault.

Hi Roger
Have you tried a compression test? I've done a couple of scenic's with burnt exhaust valves. I wasted quite a bit of time on the first one testing ignition/injection system only to find lack of compression.

Thanks for responses,

After a bit more searching found fault - water in fuel crystallising injector tips. Cyls 1 and 4 were worse than 2 and 3. Cleaned inj tips and fuel system including tank, replaced filter and and car now going fine.
