Renault Scenic 2.0 2003 Auto - Will not tickover, codes 003, 057 and 135 - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2003
Engine Size and Code *: 2.0cc
( Optional ) ECU Type: Sirus
( Optional ) Scanner Used: Autocom

003 Air inlet temp sensor
057 Lambda probe before catalytic converter
135 Brake pedal sensor

Vehicle was presented with stalling problems when coming to idle (it wont tickover). After scoping lambda found it had flat-lined at pretty much 0 volts, CO reading was 6%, checked brake pedal sensor and found it to be faulty. Air temp sensor was found to be OK.

Replaced O2 sensor and brake pedal switch, no faults now being logged but engine will still not tick-over. Scoped MAP sensor (OK). Smoked manifold for leaks (OK), De-phaser is making an ugly sound at low engine speeds but the customer is saying he had a “proper” mechanic to check it and he said it was just slightly worn!!!

I’ve suggested checking the throttle body for operation but I’m getting a bit of grief off the customer over spending £116.98 so far and it still won’t tick-over! I said I had told him we had to eliminate the parts we know were faulty before we go on to the more tasty items. So can anyone help, I’ve activated the throttle body via diagnostic port and I can hear it working and unfortunately my magic wand stopped working so I have to go in and start stripping!

Sounds as though you have got one of "those" customers. My sympathies. What are the exhaust emissions like now? ie have they dropped from 6%. I have no idea what a de-phaser is or does. Will it idle normally on start up or does it stall? 4 gas emissions might show up something if you can publish them. My next step would be to clean the throttle body.

Question; Why was the Lambda sensor replaced?

And what is the new one reading?

Hi guys,

Co levels all back to normal (pass the emissions test MOT spec) after changing O2 sensor, O2 sensor is now switching better than 1 hz at 2500 rpm. reason I changed it Mark was O2 sensor had no activity and was showing lean (go rich) when CO was high with no exhaust leaks found. Pete the de-phaser is Renaults term for the variable cam timing actuator on the end of the cam shaft, and no it won't tickover at any time. I have had these causing stalling problems but they usually show a fault code, I'm taking the manifold and throttle body off for inspection tomorrow I'll let you know how I got on.

hi mark dont know if this will help but i recently had a laguna around 2001/2 1.8cc with same idle problem resolved by cleaning throttle housing and also found on the cam cover was a kind of breather housing bolted on top that had a very small hole blocked not sure if yours has the same setup but worth a look

can you reset adaptions with autocom
ive had to reset ecu adaptions quite often with renaults,but also good idea to clean throttle body first if customer permits of course but if the dephaser if causing a rattling noise it needs replacing or you are wasting your time with anymore repairs,good luck

Yes did re-set adaption values but to no avail, will let you know how it pans out today.

Hi everyone,

Took off manifold and throttle body was totally mucked up, cleaned and reset adaption values and tick-over is now perfect. Thanks to everyone for their input.
