Rover 45 1.8 K16 2004 - Rough running when cold - Fixed #

hello,
i got this rover 45, when it first came in it was low on compression on cylinders 3 & 4 really hard to start and when it did ran like a bag of nails and the cooling fans ran continuously.

Did what i call a routine head gasket.

started up first time lovely, but if it was driven it would juddered along the road and the revs would jump up and down but not cut out.

scanned it found the o2 sensor faulty so replaced, thats fine now.
got the p0500 code VSS. as there was no abs codes i put a crank sensor on it still wouldn't clear.

put a temp sensor on it to just in case that was faulty.
When the fault is happening theres just the on code, but if i let it go on for a while the tps code comes up short to earth, now it that just a code that is triggerd by the fault or could that be the fault?

I'm at a bit of a loss with this one now.

your help would be much appreciated.

Check the wiring for shorts where it goes round the rear of the inlet manifold and attached to the main coolant pipe.Give it a shake while engine running and you could reposition loom to see if this helps. It seems from your post that a lot of guess work has been done.Who pay's?

hello,
thanks for your reply, will try this in the morning.

not a ot of guess work at all, cooling sensor was the only one i changed without testing, for the sake of £16 when i picked up the parts.

The crank sensor was repaced due to keep flagging vss when unplugged and no other code, didnt have acess to scope as modis isnt working.

and o2 sensor was faulty.

so not really alot of guess work at all.

but thanx for your post and will let you no how i got on.

Not saying you've done this but i think the tps and cmp multi-plugs can be ifitted in either position as i've found out before and does cause a problem like this.

This wa on a Rover 75 k series though but fairly similar layout.

Have you checked the tps voltage? I had a lotus k series with exactly the same problem. Found it by checking tps voltage at idle. Should be a steady voltage (about 0.8 volt if i remember correctly).
Mine was up and down on tickover without throttle moving. There is a spring inside the sensor and that had failed allowing the sensor to shake. Changed tps got it off an old metro in the scrapyard and fault was cured.
Also worth doing a compression test as have had another similar problem where valve seats have warped when engine has been overheated very common and will cause a similar fault and flag up o2 sensor faults due to raw fuel etc going down the pipe. head back off recut valves and seats and back together usually sorts it.

How did you arrive at a crankshaft position sensor, from a P0500 Vehicle Speed Sensor fault code? Autodata lists a transmission vehicle speed sensor in the wiring diagram.

What was wrong with the oxygen sensor & how did you condemn it? Are you sure that the O2 sensor was not reporting correctly & it was a lean or rich state that was driving the signal to stay high or low?

Has this got the correct oil in it? Could the hydraulic lifters be jacking? What MAP value are you seeing in live data?

hello all,

thanks for your responces,

found o2 sensor was faulty by checking live data, found points its dropping off to 0.00v then up to 65v and really slow to react under reving. Replaced and was working fine when the car was running fine.

came to the cranksensor due to there being no other fault codes in the abs or any other system, and i was sure it was the rear right wheel that was the the VSS, must be wrong then. (ok i was cutching at straws with that one.

its had a oil change and fush whn the head was done. but its weird since moving the wires it hasnt done it since. Customer got it to try and hasnt herd anything since. so will report fixed if i dont here anything by the end of the week.

Hello all

had the car back to day for a wheel bearing, so thought id spend some time ripping the loom apart on top the cooling pipe as suggested since i had the car all day, and i found a wire corroded from the inside out, repaird that and whayhay it still hasnt been a problem.
