Range Rover P38 2001 4.6 - None start - Fixed #

( Optional) Fault Codes: 0148 0039

Hi all, need a little help.
I have a rangerover p38 in for a none start.
two fault codes 0039 imobiliser code incorrect and 0148 alarm signal fault. the alarm seems to work ok and the dash light goes out and entering the eka makes no difference. Looking at live data the imobiliser status shows ok but there is no rpm reading, I've scoped the crank sensor, it's giving a signal but only about half a voltage of amplitude, not sure if the imobiliser would affect the rpm in live data or not.
So I'm a little stuck, is it imobiliser or crank sensor fault. should I still be able to see rpm if the imobiliser is faulty?

Any help or info would be appreciated, Autodata has nothing on these.

Hi Chris,

Can't tell you much about the immobilizer, but yes normally you will still get a signal from the crank sensor, usually the immobilizer just prevents the ign and injector circuits from working (have you scoped these? do they have battery volts?). According to my data the crank sensor is a hall type half a volt doesn't sound right normally they work on 5v or 12v. I've just been stung by sensor amplitudes on a diesel Peugeot (see in diesel section).

P.S.
Just checked again, depends which ECU is fitted one has hall the other has inductive and therefore is dependant on cranking speed for output, can you check the resistance to see if it's in spec?.

Hi Chris, does your scantool show the settings in the BECM? I have had this fault a couple of times before, there is a 4 digit code sent from the BECM to the engine ecu, if this code is incorrect the engine will not start and it will set an immob code, although probably nothing will be shown on dash(this is not the same as the eka code). If the dash shows "engine disabled" you have an alarm problem and this is when you need the eka, make sure you have correct code and the door lock switches are working.

Also if you can see the BECM settings make sure the engine ecu type is correct

Thanks for the replies. turned out to be the wrong imobiliser code in becm as Mark said. Had to get a man with autologic to come and sort it.
Autodiagnos will allow you to enter the code in becm but it can't read it from engine ecu, so that's a waste of time.

I have had a few of these in now where the vehicle immobilises itself and requires the ecu matching to the Becm.

One of the cars came from Norfolk and had never been a problem untill he parked it outside his friends house in Barnsley, It was parked within a few hundred yards of a Mobile phone mast and he left it there 2 nights and the indicators stuck on both nights and immobilised itself.

The next one was bought by a pub landlord who parked it in the Pub car park And funnily enough in the same car park was a mobile phone mast,

If he parked the vehicle just down the road, it never caused a problem, but he kept risking it and parked it in the car park, But after about 10 times of having to have the vehicle recovered and the immobiliser reset, He decided to sell it.

I asked the dealers if there had been a recall, but they said that they didn't know anything about the problem. A Modified ariel was available but they couldn't say what the reason for fitting the modified ariel was.

I also tried an Autodiagnos on the first one that we did and it failed to reset the immobiliser, So the T4 including the trolley went in the back of the van and the job was completed in a few minutes.

Another case of using the correct tool for the job. Most Aftermarket sacanners are just a waste of time, space and money.

Hi Tony, I think the modified aerial was to overcome this sort of problem, with the original one fitted the BECM wakes up whenever it recieves a signal, even though it may be from a different car or even a mobile phone mast. This will soon flatten the battery which can change settings. The modified part only wakes the BECM when the correct fob is used.

I'm with Mark on this, I always recommend to my P38 customers to have the new receiver, it seems to pre-screen the signal and only wake the BECM when appropriate and as a result the battery does not go flat (quite) so quickly.
Prior to fitting a new receiver on one occasion I operated a Renault Scenic plipper by a P38 and it woke up!
I had a customer with a 4.6 that lost its code on several occasions, I did not link it to flat battery problems but it's extremely likely as it was little used and it was before the days when I knew about the upgraded receiver.

The last 2 that we had this problem did not have flat batteries, ( although I have seen dozens that did suffer with flat battery problems ) I put the immobiliser fault solely down to the stray signals from the phone masts.

I have also tested several for battery drains and found that they wake up when various non landrover remotes are operated within the area of the vehicle.

I will definitely recommend new ariels to the next ones suffering with this problem. ( Although I did on the last one and he thought it was easier to keep it away from the phone mast, but after paying for several recovery trucks, it would have been a lot cheaper to replace the ariel )

Hi,
I had one in 2 weeks ago with a flat battery after 5 days of being parked up.
He already had a new battery in feb this year, battery tested ok, charging was fine and there was no parasitic drain "at time of testing"

This was being "woken" up with other vehicle remotes - it would stay awake for 2 minutes each time with a draw of 0.50A. The motor was parked up in a public car park and also had a National Tyres depot just across the road, so I imagine that it was being woken up quite frequently !
A new receiver was £169 + vat, cheaper option was to disconnect the ariel from the reciever (tight ass customer !, although I have been informed that he has just purchased a "Marina" and not the morris kind either !!

)
Disconnecting the ariel stopped it reacting to "spurious" signals and still gave the existing remote 6ft working distance.

ps - passat, rover 400, ford mondeo remotes all woke this up !

You can trim a sheeps wool many times, but you can only fleece it once !
