Vauxhall Zafira 1.8 Z18XE 2001 - Code P0130 - Fixed #

( Optional ) Scanner Used: solus
( Optional) Fault Codes: P0130

Help! I have this vauxhall Zafira, came to me on the back of an AA truck, broken cam belt, usual repairs, valves, rehone bores, lots of cleaning of blocked throttle body, even rocker cover vent.
The car ran really well on start up and test drive, but after customer picked up it almost immediately flagged P0130.
Scoped lambda sensor with new toy, sure enough sensor stuck on about .85v if you rev the car to about 3k the sensor will switch briely then fix on about 4.5v untill you return it to idle.
There are no air leaks either in inlet or exhaust, someone has only last week fitted a front sensor, and as the rear sensor appears to be a front one in the rear hole I swapped these and gained the same results so I do not suspect the lambda sensor.
This has no EGR, I also scoped the MAF on a snapped throttle, which looked good, am wodering if this one is faulty, perhaps I should have scoped it under both failing conditions.
Trouble is 9pm came and I wanted to get home!

Two possible engine,s so what,s the engine code.

Also i sure those two engines use different lambda sensors ! is it genuine ?

Hi Phil,

I am wondering if the fault code was there before you got hold of it. Emission figures with trim values might be of interest.

Speaking of trim values. They will only reset on these if you perform a throttle adaptation. They don't reset when you clear codes.

I had one stuck rich with high trim values from a previous fault.

Thanks, all relevant comments, NTK sensor, but I have used these myself on the 1.6 with good results, yes this code was previously set as we code read ther car right at the end of work as lamp was on, then cleared it then test drove it, the ntk sensor was fitted a week ago by another garage who according to the customer works on vauxhall as a sort of specialist.
Throttle body reset, a good point this proceedure failed to function on my solus, I forgot to mention that this happened, we did not have any chioce on engine code through the solus, so I did not find out what it was!
Thanks for all replies, must add I am not very up to speed on interpreting fuel trims, probarbly need to use them more!

Vaux. TIS list,s 2 1.8,s for 2001 so i would check the engine code and did the Solus go in correctly as "good point this proceedure failed to function on my solus" would seem it did not.

Also re-check that lambda because they are different parts for each 1.8, so easy for a factor to supply the wrong one.

Tis lists 2 possible 1.8 engine,s on 2001, Tech 2 only lists "z" engine, but then again Tech 2 will not allow you into the wrong ecu, unlike the Snappy which seems eager to get into the ecu any way it can.

hi when you checked the lamda probe did you confirm the ground on the sensor as i have had problems with lack of grounding through the ecu causing and incorrect lamda reading

Hi Martin, short answer, no..I can try this today though, I did think as I had mid range activity (about 2500 rpm) that I could discount actual sensor and wireing. Back on it today, aiming for a fix today!

Engine code Z18XE, have checked oxy sensor and it is the correct one for this code, have scoped sensor using earth wire on sensor and has same issues, unfortunately freeze frame data is not present in EOBD, must ave deleted when erased codes.
Will post later any new developments, ta, fill.

it is still worth confirming the ground on the sensor as a bad earth will cause it to float
dont forget that its still part of the circit

Further developments today, rechecked cam timing no problems there, tested ECT on scope seems good, tried to reset throttle body again, still with no success. Did later on get lambda switching by introducing new earth to ECU, Lambda switched on idle on two occasions, and once while revving at a steady throttle for about three miniutes before returning to high voltage, may be on to something here as it seems slightly random, it may stick on a high voltage or low, any thoughts?

FIX!.......
Scoped oxygen sensor on actual sensor also on ECU pin, same result, no switching, sensor flat lining at 800mv when warm both ends of loom, I pulled ECU off of inlet manifold and rapidly cooled it using freeze and release, sensor began switching again, but for much longer this time as ECU was much cooler than it could ordinarily be.
Ordered new ECU from vauxhall £236 + vat (better than £390+ vat wanted by well known reman company)
Code in by freindly mate in independant vauxhall dealer, £25 + vat, (better than £79 +vat by main agent!)
Drove car 20 miles all good no light and still switching!
PHEW!

hi have you ever opened one of those ecus i did last week as had problem with crank sensor circit the contacts seem to be extreemly thin wire stamped onto a circit board then covered in a jell that diddnt seem to set the contacts were all difigured and shorting against one another
what a wonderfull idea lol
