Volvo V70 B5234T3 2001 - Misfire, code 3503 misfire cylinder 3 - Unresolved #

Year of Manufacture *: 2001
Engine Size and Code *: B5234T3
( Optional ) Scanner Used: KTS

I have a volvo V70 T5 wich is giving up codes 3503 - cat damaging misfires detected
3533 - misfire cylinder 3
The car has had new spark plugs and 1 coil pack but we keep getting the same codes back even though we have swapped the coils , plugs and injectors into different positions.
compression test shows low compression on cylinder 1 but the others are ok
I have occasionally had an air mass signal improbable code but cleaning it seems to have got rid of that. it is showing 1.23 volts at idle and around 4 at wot. Whilst I appreciate this is low I'm not keen to replace it at £190 until I have a full set of compressions and then test it again.
Problem is the vehicle is not worth a huge amount and I am mindfull of taking the head off to sort cyl 1 until I can be sure that the cyl 3 code is related.
Any thoughts ?

hi i would take a look at the injector for cyl 3 and make sure its working correctly ie a scope checking current ramping signal as well as signal from ecu.
i have had a 5cyl with a leek on the inlet manifold causing a slight miss

Worth a thought, Not exactly same as yours, (i.e yours seems specific to cylinder 3) but did give strange symptoms for the fix.

Thanks , I did look at that thread already but the fact it is giving a specific cyl 3 code led my thoughts away from the throttle body.
I must confess I have not scoped the injectors, but have swapped them to different positions and the code has not changed.
I forgot to mention this has an automatic trans
I will get the pico out today, but not expecting to see much - surely a wiring fault to that injector would give up an injector cyl 3 code ?
The strange thing is if I lift up the coil packs , cyl 1 ( with the low compression ) is the one that is having least effect.
There must be a reason the code is flagging cyl 3 instead of cyl 1 - I have the firing order as 1-2-4-5-3 so it cant even be the 3rd cyl in the firing order ( like diesel injector coding thread )

Hi Glen,

What are your fuel trims reading?

What are the vac readings at idle and are they steady?

It may pay you to carry out a cylinder leakage test on the vehicle.

I second what Mark has said as I think you need to be sure of the mechanical condition. I would just add that if you have access to a pressure transducer or a First Look sensor that would easily confirm the faulty cylinder.

Well sadly the customer has decided it is not viable spending any more on a 51 plate volvo with 160k on the clock so he has taken it away.

I see this is an old thread but I had a 51 plate 2.0t 5cyl Volvo in today, (s60 I believe) with a misfire that brought up codes :3503 misfire at least one cylinder & 3543 misfire cylinder 4. (read with verdict). I swapped no.4 coil to no.2 & plug to no.1, cleared faults & road tested. Same codes returned. Turned out to be no.5 coil, thought snap-on had got the definition wrong but now also thinking volvo may be using firing order (as Glen said, 1-2-4-5-3)
