VW Golf 1.6 16v AUS 2000 - EGR valve leak? - Unresolved #

Hi

Having smoke tested the inlet and engine for air leeks i noticed a leek from the egr valve breather.
I was lucky enough to be able to test another valve on another vehicle that did the same.
my question is have i got 2 faulty valves or are they supposed to leek.
With the engine running there is a vacuum leek.
have removed the egr valve to check if its sealing/seating properly and there is no fault but the breather is open to atmosphere.

Has anyone else found this or can anyone tell me if the valves are faulty.
The ecu is reporting map sensor implacable

I have seen this before and feel it is normal.

With regard to the MAP fault I would
A) check cam timing first !!
B)Compare MAP Live with gauge.
C) double check EGR for sticking, I have had this cause MAP code & poor idle intermittently on these.

Check engine breather too, disconnect it and plug the pipe, see if it corrects the vacuum. done lots of these for this problem.

hi thanks for the replies i will run some more tests on Monday and will try and get to the bottom of the misfire. couldn't see any other leek with the smoke pro.
i will check the cam belt timing and tension
the only problem is that it seems to be the dreaded intermittent fault

Evening Martin,

I note from your last post that this vehicle has an intermittent misfire. Has any basic checks been carried out regarding ignition, emissions etc? Your first post indicates a vacuum leak, would be interested in the readings you have. Any DTC's?

hi pete as usual this job comes to me last in the line a new coil and leads as well as plugs have been fitted.
when i first looked at it it was missing then it stopped and wouldn't do it again so i smoke tested it and saw the leek so removed and cleaned made no difference.
will have another look on Monday.
will post findings

On the 16V engines intermitant missfires can often be down to worn valve guides, done quite a few now.
Unfortunately doesnt always show on a compression test either. Its more of a done everything else so lets take off the head & have a look !!

hi i think ian has hit the nail on the head how ever after more time spent on it today i was scoping the map sensor i noticed the reading slightly high 1v ant idle and when misfiring 1.24v/1.35v was lucky to capture this due to it misfired for a very short moment and wouldn't do it again.
most annoying the customer has not given the go ahead to proceed due to lack of funds
fault code is p1553
there are no visible leaks (tested with smoke)

The egr is defo open to atomsphere and the reason for this is very unknown, as i went down the same road as you, but i went further and wanted to know why, so i strip it and did a few test with vac gauges etc, the little breather pipe on the end of the egr is there to help with flow of gases, i dont know why only these engines use it thoug, but it must be writen into the map by the manufacturer...
Next due to the fault code, i would look at the throttle body for being clogged up, i will also tell you that the throttle body as a direct connection to the map code.
