Peugeot 206 1.1L HFX 2004 - Engine cutting out, codes P0215, P0217 & P0204 - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2004
Engine Size and Code *: 1.1 HFX
( Optional ) ECU Type: Marelli
( Optional) Fault Codes: P0215 Engine shutoff solenoid

Hey guys,
How we all doing?
I'm a newbie here so please go easy on me...

This 206 just seems to cut out under normal driving conditions. It can be completely random.

There are a whole host of codes:
P0215 Engine shutoff solenoid
P0217 Injector circuit high (this code goes for all 4 injectors)
P0204 Injector circuit malfunction (this code for cylinder 3 + 4)

My question I guess guys is: What's reporting to the ECU that's telling it to switch the fuel pump off? (Upon failure, you here the fuel pump relay switching first..)

When the car is running, it runs fine - it really does. We have scoped the injectors and they are all good...

Any pointers would be grately appreciated.

Welcome Andy, wonky coil packs have always been a problem on these, usually giving fault codes for injectors and idle valves, suggest you have a read through the archives! Regards, Gwyn

We're suspecting an ECU fault now tbh.

As Gwyn says, genuine plugs and coil pack before any in depth diagnostics.

These do often suffer with injector problems.

Does this cut out dead, without warning or like running out of fuel ?? What happens when you re start it?

has it go a suppressor fitted to the coil ?

It cuts out dead - not like running out of fuel.
Pretty sure no coil suppressor - customer (another garage) has it back now.
Sometimes it restarts - other times no.

Do we not think 'iffy' coil packs and plugs would show up when driving and / or through serial data? There's nothing pointing to them, surely...?

We drove it home on Friday - with the laptop on passenger seat. All sorts of abnomalies were being kicked up - battery voltage 'appearing' to be constant 11V, vehicle 'appearing' to not be running in closed loop. Vehicle did not cut out on 20 min run home. It cut out twice on the return journey the next morning.

We've advised the next course of action should be a test of the ECU. If they do, or I receive any updates, I shall post them.

That sounds like a scanner fault, ie it,s going in under the wrong system.

So what scanner ?

No Kev - the scanner indicates management system when connected....
We have a Delphi DS150.

These thing suffer from strange running issues / random fault codes due to interference from plug and coil, hence the advice to replace / fit OE.

Along the same line I had one that had intermittent running issues, which was eventually fixed by fitting a suppressor to the coil. for what they cost I would fit one any way.

fit between coil feed and earth, should be 2.2 uf high voltage. these where fitted as OE on later models.

A ECU test is OK, but of course fault may not show on a test rig.

I would agree with Kev, would not be happy with scanner if showing strange live data.

Great post Aidan - thanks very much.

The scanner is showing the ECU's interpretation of the data - hence some alarm bells when we started seeing what was being shown! (Scanner is fine - it's been used twice this morning.)

I do accept your point re. "random fault codes due to interference from plug and coil, hence the advice to replace / fit OE."

At the moment I'm happy with my repair recommendation to my customer: At £45.00 + VAT for an ECU test I think the cost / risk ratio is aligned more to the customer's interests than fitting new plugs and coils...

We shall see!

Andy, for the cost of a set of correct plugs and the loan of a proper Peugeot coil pack from your friendly car sales or neighbouring garage, worth the effort.
You may well be right that the ECU is going down, probably because it has been spiked by a faulty or cheap coil pack.
Peugeot dealer would sort this car. He would fit a new ECU AND a proper coil pack. Some of the early genuine Peugeot coil packs gave trouble like this, Peugeot then uprated them and in later years only fitted one type (Bougicord, I think). I am also sure that later models have the suppresser fitted internally.
Course, I am probably completely wrong! Gwyn

No, I think you're talking absolute sense Gwyn.

I asked the ECU people if they have recommendations / stipulations after this kind of ECU repair and they said no!
Absolutely though, we've had Focus ECU's repaired where they've been spiked and - yes, of course the coil pack has to be changed.

Shame, the underlying customer is an 89 yr old gent with health issues and not a lot of money. We may never see the conclusion to this!

Guys,
Coil pack was indeed faulty - thanks so much for all the input.

You know what? We checked the ignition on the oscilloscope...Cylinder 2 was indeed slightly 'iffy' but I dismissed it at the time as the car appeared to be running fine (when it was running...) Schoolboy error, eh?!

Lesson learned for me there: "Mr Customer, there is definitely an abnormally with your ignition. As part of this repair process, we advise a new coil pack and plugs as a first course of action. By rectifying this fault, there is a good chance the cutting out issue will also be cured...."
