VW Polo 1.4 BKY 2005 - Non start, misfire, codes P1358, P1355, P1361, P1364, P1345 & P1559 - Fixed #

Engine Size and Code *: 1400cc BKY
( Optional ) ECU Type: Marelli 4TV
( Optional ) Scanner Used: Bosch KTS
( Optional) Fault Codes: P1358 P1355 P1361 P1364 P1345 P1559

Help Required Please

This vehicle cam in from the VW dealers with a mis-fire on 2 cylinders.
It had just had 2 coils fitted and the dealers said they would have to take the head off to go any further.lol
Carried out a compression test 180 - 125 - 125 - 200 psi. Cylinders 2+3 come upto 200psi with a bit of oil squirted in the bores.
No spark and no signal at injectors.

We have checked scope pattens for crank and cam sensors and both seem ok at sensor and at the ecu.
Cam-belt timing is ok.
Posatives and negs to ecu are all there.

Now I'm thinking that we may have an ecu problem as the first 2 coils went down one after the other and not together, now there is none of them working.

Hope some one can shed a bit of light on this problem before we send the ecu away for testing.

Richard - I think you will find this is a compression problem and the VW dealer may well be correct - we had one like this a few years ago and the ECU was shutting down injection pulse - we had roughly the same compression reading as you have - head off and new inlet valves cured the fault!

Not sure I'd be taking the head off yet. Certainly 2 & 3 compressions look poor but Richard said they came up to 200 psi with a little oil. (poss. bore wash??) Can you give the code definitions Richard?

FIXED......... After a bit of research I found out that the ecu turns off the spark to protect the CAT when it sees misfires.

Cleared the codes, fitted 2 more new coils and all was Ok.

So much for the dealers wanting to take the head off, makes you wonder if they would of stood the bill for that ????? lol.

Glad you sorted it, I assume you mean the ecu shuts down the signal to the injectors when it detects a miss-fire??

I hope this does'nt come back and bite you on the bum Richard - i'd be worried about those low compressions.
The ECU surely does shut down the injectors when it detects a misfire, and that includes low compressions even slightly down in comparison to others.
I'd even be worried about just replacing valves having taken the head off. Its well known these suffer from piston ring problems and oil usage.
