Fiat Punto 1.2 8V 2001 - Non runner, codes P0351 & P0352 - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 51
Engine Size and Code *: 1.2 8V
( Optional) Fault Codes: Coil 1, Coil 2 (P0351,P0352)

non start, Codes as given. If codes are cleared then sometimes it will start and run for a second or two before stopping. Codes have then returned.

Am expecting that it is an ECU issue, I had one like this a few years back, and the voltage trace I am getting is similar to the [BAD] one listed in the Picoscope waveform database.

however there is one thing puzzling me.

I am actually getting sparks at the plugs. The reason why the engine isnt running is because the injectors are not being switched. I cannot remember if this happened last time. Is this a "Safe mode" thing, If the ECU doesnt like the coil signal it shuts down the injectors?

Hi Paul,

The ECU may well switch off the injectors when logging the two codes listed

Hi paul

The ECU will possibly shut down the injectors for any kind of misfire to save the CAT.

The ecu monitors misfires via crankshaft speed.

Can you scope power and ground to the coil also Ignition primary and especially current?

Maybe the ECU might also shut down the injectors in the event of a major ignition failure (shorted coil) I am NOT stating this as fact

Can you scope the crank sensor?

Even though you are getting a spark is it strong enough and at the right time?

If you suspect the ECU always check powers and grounds to the module before replacing it.

We had one with very similar problems a few years ago and it turned out to be sheared teeth on the timing belt. Worth a look mate.

Hi Paul,

Scoping the primary will give similar waveforms for each coil pack, if just looking at the bad one you may think it was ok but comparing you will see the difference, it will still generate a KV and spark but as said is it right time or strong enough, a new ECU will cure it

Replacement reconditioned unit (Original was apparantly completly FUBAR) from ACtronics and all is well!
