Hi,
Got this car in with emission light on read fault code p0010 variable camshaft timing, camshaft position actuator(bank 1). Not sure how this system works I have check both wires on plug and i am getting 12v on both. I have scoped the feeds and I'm getting solid 14v on both wires . Is this correct or should i get variable earth voltage?
Is the valve only electrically operated or is it done with oil pressure also?
Any help appreciated.

Morning,
Looks as though it needs Cambelt replaced with new dephaser and solenoid .
This is a warranty job so will have to see what they will pay for.
Any idea on the time for this job ?
Sorry for sounding daft but what does pwm stand for? Is it the speed of earth switching from ecu?

PWM = Pulse Width Modulation.

Don,t take this wrong but you asked about training course,s and AutoLogic, spend the money on training, Autologic won,t help much when you don,t understand basic,s.

Thats "Catch 22".
When you have been on a few course,s you will resolve many jobs in half the time, so you will have more time to attend more course,s.

Or spend a hour a day reading as many post,s here and else-where you can and you will learn a lot (if you soak it all up)!!

In the time it took you to post your original post on this thread, you could have searched the forum and had your answer.

Not the speed, that's called the frequency, measured in Hz.

PWM is the DUTY CYCLE within the blocks of time.

If we take one second in time and split it into 100 separate "blocks" of time each block would be 10ms long and the frequency of the signal would be 100Hz.

Now if we look at one 10ms "block" of time and provide an earth path to the consumer for 3ms of the 10ms period and remove it for the remaining 7ms we would have a duty cycle of 30%.

When we increase the "ON" time (time it is supplied an earth) to 5ms we will have a duty cycle of 50% and 7ms would give us a 70% duty cycle.

The result of doing this is that we (the ECU) can control the CURRENT flowing within the circuit and therefore the speed of a motor, the brightness of a bulb, the strength of an electro magnet etc etc.

Most Frequencies are fixed but watch out because others are not.

Thanks for that answer , I new the basic operation but not to that depth .
Training is important , but because I'm so busy running the garage I don't get round to sorting it.
Most of the diagnostics are straight forward (coil packs , crank sensors etc) , but they are getting more difficult.
When are the Bosch courses and were ?

Hi,
The warranty company paid for all the bits including t-belt kit and w-pump and 6 hours labour . It fixed the fault also.
The instrument cluster packed up straight after and the warranty paid for the repair.
Give you faith in some company's pity there not all the same.

There are alternatives to Frank Massey when it comes to training, so don't forget to consider other options.

James Dillon is particularly well thought of by many respected technicians. He delivers his courses in a thorough, thought provoking, yet relaxed & easy to digest way.

Mark Carter is a Bosch trainer too & I have heard good things about their courses & I hope to attend one soon.

Of course, I have to add that you can venture out on your own training course too, as I did when I bought my first oscilloscope. You may already have one, but if you don't then I can't recommend it highly enough. With an inquisitive mind, you will soon start to witness things that you will make you question your observations. Finding the answers to those questions is not so difficult these days, with access to forums such as this. Rarely will you be ignored, if you have taken the trouble to grab a waveform & post it along with a question.

Once you get to grips with the basics of scope use, you will soon start to understand more fully, the finer details of subjects like Pulse Width Modulation, Frequency Modulation & many other interesting electrical processes.

Some may say that it is not necessary to understand these subjects, but there is a school of thought that, they are the foundations from which you can build a solid understanding of diagnostics upon.
