Citroen Xsara NFV 1.6 2004 - Water ingress into PCM multi plug #

Hi all

CITROEN XSARA PICASSO 2004
1587cc Engine code NFV
Water ingress into PCM multi plug

Have seen this today and am a bit stumped as to where the water has come from

Plastic bag type cover still in place covering multi-plugs.
Water only in first plug of PCM
Temperature sensor and switch on thermostat housing dry and shows no sign of water in plugs.

As can be seen in photo
Pin f3 missing
g2 & h2 heavy corrosion
Others showing signs of corrosion

Do not really want to replace PCM until I can cure the water problem

Any ideas where the water can get in?

Hi David,

This is a common problem the coolant capillaries from the coolant temp sensor pin terminal up the individual wire so no sign in the plug. PSA fix change sensor and coolant plus the resulting damage...ECU!

I've thought of putting the CTS wires into another connector before the ECU to protect it should the CTS fail again, also check the electric thermostat wires but I think they terminate in the centre ECU plug.

Thanks for replying

This was my first thought, but i would have hoped to have seen some coolant at the sensor plugs but they are bone dry with no stains.

This has not got the electronic thermostat.

Yes it does seem strange with no signs in the CTS sensor plug but I have experienced it myself and seen the PSA TSB about it.

Ref the electric thermostat PSA don't mention that as a problem but the last one I did had coolant in the middle ECU plug and the elec therm does terminate there.

Some models have the Valeo ECU fitted no one can repair them and they are over £700 + vat from the dealers ouch!

Could the CTS have already been changed but coolent in ecu plug lingered in there until it rotted the terminals causing a further problem??

Very strange as i have just done a 2.0 HDI with water in the same rear plug.

Bosch EDC 15 C2.

I couldt find how it got in there,

CTS is on the center plug. I will do a coolant pressure test before i send it back out.

Hi David,

I'd be opening the ECU up and soldering wires from the pins inside the ECU, then joining to the loom, by-passing the plug.
