Nissan Almera 1.8 2001 - Code P0340 cam position fault bank - Fixed #

Year of Manufacture *: 2001
Engine Size and Code *: 1800
( Optional ) ECU Type: hitachi
( Optional ) Scanner Used: Snap on. bosch kts
( Optional) Fault Codes: p0340. cam position fault bank 1

Hi

I missing something on this, seems pretty straight forward to diagnose but im struggling.

Non start
Garage already fitted 3 cam sensors

Ive scoped cam sensor- no signal, live and earth all ok(In desperation ive cut live and earth and taken straight to battery)
Ive sent ecu away for test and its been confirmed as fine.
Ive scoped crank sensor- good text book signal, told by Nissan cam and crank sensors are same part no , so ive swopped position- the cam sensor in crank gives good signal, crank sensor in cam no signal
soooo im thinking mechanical, so ive removed top of engine-cam variator pick ups for cam sensor in perfect condition, air gap looks fine.
Ive even waived a spanner in front of sensor and still nothing

Everything points to sensor/mechanical fault but ive ruled it out

Any ideas??? however oddball!

Hi Mark,

Yes...its a poser. I would ask if the replacement parts are after market or not. Also. do you know what the resistance values should be?

Hi Mark,

Question; with the cam sensor disconnected what voltages do you have at the harness end across all three pins? (referenced to ground)

Then repeat the same test on the crankshaft harness and compare.

Hi.
Thanks for that .
They are non gen.
Debating putting genuine sensor in but talking myself out of it
due to swopping sensor over and proving its fine!!

Out of ideas so may just bite the bullet and go for it

I don't understand?

If both sensors work plugged into the crank sensor wiring then its not the SENSOR !!

Carry out the testing as advised and you may well find your answer.

Been back to vehicle this morn

Readings as follows- Supply 12.3volts
black wire 0 volts, signal wire 0volts

Cam and crank identical, both with sensors unplugged.
With sensors plugged in, ive volt dropped earth,
Supply drops to 10.8v on scope.both on cranking.

Again cam and crank identical!!

I have been told the cam should have a bias voltage on the signal wire- by the ecu test company-hence why i sent it away for test to then be told it should be 0volts and then pulled up by the sensor.

So the signal wire is definitely 0V on both sensor plugs with the sensors disconnected? That's slightly odd as I would expect to see a voltage on the signal wire when disconnected as these sensors normally pull the voltage to down to 0v when switched on - ie sensor gap open 5v (for instance) - sensor gap closed - 0V.

Yes 0v- both sensors

I would also expect a voltage, hence why i rang ECU company and they confirmed a 12v bias voltage on the signal wire, sensor unplugged, therefore I sent to them to be told they had got it wrong, should be 0v and ECU want faulty £65.00 please!!!!!

Hmm, that is odd. Do you mind me asking which company you used to test it? I have had very mixed results from various different companies.

I recently had an issue with a Volvo V70 T5 ECU that had lost an output to an ignition coil. The company in question tested it and reported no fault found. I eventually got them to swap the immobiliser coding over to a second hand unit and hey presto - all ok...

My usual people(ECU tecnolagies) couldn't do it
So I sent to Avilec in Isle of wight, they specialise in Jap ecus, they have done a few Hondas in past that others have failed/couldn't do with no problems.

I'm still thinking ECU but the crank sensor readings/voltages are identical(other than a signal) which then points back to sensor/pick up issue which I have proven to be correct!!
Which then takes me back to ECU ...........

On paper it looks a simple issue !

Got a primera in tomorrow at another garage with same engine code that I'm going to look at before they mot it

One simple way to prove it would be to feed it a signal through a large resister and see what it does.

As in 12v thru a resister down signal wire to ECU??

What should it do ???

Tested a Almera Tino with same engine quickly at Cam sensor and have same readings as abovr???

In fairness I use Avilec and they have always been pretty good. They have told me in the past if they can't test an ECU rather than some the less scrupulous companies there are out there who appear to say they have tested it, charge you and return with no fault found...

I suppose another way to double check this odd signal would be to remove the cam or crank sensor, leave it plugged into the crank sensor connector on the loom and check the voltage on the signal wire. Is it 0 volts? Then try passing a spanner or some metal object across its face and see if the voltage changes and if so what to. Repeat the test at the cam sensor plug. Let us know what the results are.

Ive done the "spanner test" very early on

I get a voltage from crank but nothing from cam,

Im missing something blatant here, but cant see what!!!

A garage owner friend of mine and I are going to get the problem car and the Tino side by side with two scopes and go from there.

When do you see the voltage? Is it when the spanner is across the face or when the face is clear? I'm just trying to get my head around how the sensor works. Have you checked the wiring between the ECU and the cam sensor, checking for continuity and short to earth?

FIXED

Right here goes......
Sat both cars side by side, 2 pico scopes into all 3 wires-Acupunture type probes into rear of plug past seal.

IGN on sensor unplugged just supply is 12v.
IGN on sensor plugged in -on the running car signal wire goes to 12v,non runner stays at 0volts

Already check continuity of wire so happy with that, so.....we swopped ecus(knowing they wont start) but hoping to confirm-what we thought- was an Ecu fault
Identical results as above with ECUS swapped.

Then I knocked probes on non running car and noticed voltage jump to 9volts on signal wire,
then slowly creep back down, wobbling pins in plug caused random voltages on signal wire......been to scrappers today and grafted new plug in...10volts signal wire, fires up first flick of key

Stripped plug...nothing to see, maybe lesson learn to double check reading into front of plug.
